Support Polar Wearlink+ Bluetooth heart rate monitors in the Android apps

Strava Mobile Team
asked this on October 12, 2012 11:22 AM

Polar makes a Bluetooth HR monitor called the Wearlink+. It uses the regular Bluetooth v2 protocol (not Bluetooth LE/Smart).

Strava's Android apps introduced support for collecting HR data from Zephyr HxM sensors in version 2.2 of the apps. This feature request is to add support for the Polar Wearlink+ Bluetooth HR sensor in a future version of the Android apps.

I just got Polar wearlink+ from a sports-shop in Trondheim. I think it is the most common strap to get in a shop in my country.

http://www.polar.fi/en/products/accessories/Polar_WearLink_transmitter_with_Bluetooth

I am very keen to use it with Strava. best regards Bjørn Eirik

Hi! Just got the BT strap from my local shop.

It would be beautiful if you could add support for it.

Best regards.

+1, RinKeeper has support for multiple HR monitors, it was a surprise to me that Strava only introduced support for 1.

Strava is my favourite running and cycling app but i am disappointed that it does not support my Polar bluetooth heart rate monitor.  I may have to use another app that does.  Please support polar

Strava is a great app, but it could be better with more heartrate monitors compatibility. Polar Wearlink is one of them. I hope it would be supported soon.

Why wouldn't you make it compatible for the Android App? (the iPhone app works fine with Polar)

When's the android version going to be updated?

Seriously guys... Would consider going pro, but never without support for leading hrm technology. I guess I'm moving back to Endomondo, where $1 gets me so much more.

Same here. I want and need Polar Wearlink+ support. When initially looking for a HRM, the Zephyr actually was my first choice, due to ostensible involvement in the medical field, but it's nigh impossible to get one in Europe. Polar was the next best option, but it ain't supported on Android.

Hi Tom, Polar is supported on Android (Endomondo, Sportypal al work fine with it), it's just not yet supported by Strava.

I know. I'm however looking for another solution, after Endomondo kneecapping their service. If I have to pay a sub anyway, I'm going elsewhere, and Strava came up.

As the Wearlink complies with the advertised Bluetooth compatabilty ( ie not LE/Smart) am disappointed Strava on Android can only use Zephyr HR monitors.  I have now installed a competitive app just to use Polar HR monitor.  C'mon Strava!

Adding support for the Wearlink would be much more usefull to me than the connection with Instagram.... Come on, I know that a lot of people are waiting for wearlink support. The wahoo products are only available for Iphone. The wearlink is the most common bluetooth HRM device here.

C'mon guys! There's a lot of other services using Polar Wearlink + Bluetooth!

I just signed a Premium Account, but I can't really use it properly, because I can't record HR of my workouts!

How long we will wait for this IMPORTANT feature?

Thanks!

Agree with the other posters. Polar is probably the leading supplier and the Wearlink+ is compliant with the standard. It surprises me that it didn't just simply work. Looking forward to getting support as I can't really be bothered moving to another application and Strava is very popular  locally among my peer group.

Im not buying premium until I can use my polar its a bit ridiculous that all the free apps use polar but not Strava lol makes you think the programmers are lazy or maybe Strava are in Zephr's pockets im not buying another product just to link to Strava seems just pointless really, surely if the developers find it hard to do they can just sack them and get some decent ones in maybe?

Add my name to the list of people who won't go to the Premium service without the Polar compatibility. I already have the WearLink HRM strap, so it just seems silly to me to spend another $60 for a strap when others are already supported.

Me: Hi Strava, when can we expect support for other Bluetooth and/or ANT+ variant heart rate monitors? Premium customers are begging for this; potential Premiums too!

Strava: Thanks for the push Michael! We'll do our best

Well Strava i guess that means we are just " considering supporting Strava, but we have not committed to it!!!

To be honest if it was not for veloviewer and other strava 3rd party supporters i would not be using it now.......why do we have to use other sites for the functionality you should have....why is Strava development so slow???... you should be desperate to add better functionality for the average user to this site as well as Polar support to increase your membership.

well ? any chance to see my polar iwl wearlink+ to be supported ? I'm really tired to use endomondo even if I'm importing data to strava is easy (I found a trick to import many training from endomondo to strava), but endomondo app is becoming worster in every update.

Big fan of Strava (premium user), however Sportstracker Pro is looking better and better the longer it takes to get this HRM compatibility issue sorted out. I'm guessing that its all contractual rather than technical obstacles too.

I cant believe were all stupid enough to still be using Strava when so many if not all other apps do so much more than Strava, the only reason I still use it is because a lot of my buddys use it and we compare times and miles riding if it wasnt for that I wouldnt bother as I cant use the £70 piece of equipment I have been using for years with other softwares because Strava has lazy programmers, I thought Strava needed to make money? So far they have missed out on a years premium subscription from me.

Why concentrate on iphone users when android is the strongest OS in the world?

Everyone rally to the play store and give this app 1 star, it works for some app developers makes them wake up and listen to their customers

Strava Support

As you all know we have been evaluating the Wearlink+ for a little while now. During our testing we have noticed a disturbing tendency of the device to disconnect from the phone. After doing some research on the internet** and with other apps it appears to be a common theme with the hardware. Unfortunately, the Wearlink+ is not compatible with most Android models. For the vast majority of devices out there the only known workaround seems to be to constantly replace the battery. Sadly, that means we cannot officially support this device.

I want to sincerely thank everybody for expressing interest in Wearlink+ support, but we will not be adding in official support in our apps. In our mission to support our community of athletes, we base our decisions to integrate with devices on the ability to ensure the best performance tracking experience possible. We would not think of giving you anything less.
