When I try to upload a track to the server, the app says "Strava Upload Failed, Cannot write output". Anybody can help me? Thanks
I have the same problem on one of my uploads. says "Strava Upload Failed, Cannot write output". Worked fine before and after this one. help please!
Whatever you do, DON'T log out on your phone! I did to see if that would help it upload but the ride is no longer there! :-( I think it will eventually upload if you leave it alone. Sucks to lose a ride.
Just so you know, uploading from the Strava iOS app requires you to be extremely delicate with the phone. Don't switch to another app (i.e., press the Home button). Doing so will make the upload fail. It also helps if you keep your voice down and don't subject the iPhone to sudden movements. I don't think the Strava app uses the background API for iOS; if it does, it does barely hanging on a thread because I am about 0-for-100 uploading successfully on the first try if I switch to a different app in the middle of an upload.
Hello all - If you're still having trouble please create a support request - in most cases we should be able to recover your ride.
Thanks very much.

Hi Mat, just to clarify...what I meant is that when you're uploading a ride to Strava using the iOS app, you pretty much can't do anything else on your phone until the upload is complete. If you switch to a different app, the upload will almost definitely not finish. The ride will still live in the Feed, but won't successfully upload until you allow Strava to be the foreground app during the entire duration of the upload. Annoying in this day and age of multi-core CPUs and operating systems; this harks back to Windows 3.11 for Workgroups.
Last update has messed up the iPhone!
I have lost 3 rides now and I know I lost a really good PB its really frustrating not being able to upload!
Please fix this
I am having the same problem on iPhone 3GS since updating the Strava app this morning. I have lost 2 rides now. I have a big ride tomorrow morning, but I know upload will fail again!
Patrick - Thanks. There's a few different experiences in the thread, so I was just covering my bases - but thanks for your response. I'll check in if this is the expected experience. For Ian and Francoise - we are working on identifying this problem. If you see the issue, can you please try not signing out of the app - as this will cause the upload to 'disappear' - and contact us by creating a support ticket?
Sorry for the trouble.

Also experiencing this issue. I updated to the latest version about a week ago and have lost a couple of rides since then.
Sorry for the trouble. We're working on this - please create a support request to get in contact with us.
I updated Strava on my iPhone about a week ago, and since then I have had a few rides fail to upload. Keep getting the "upload finished with errors" message. I have 2 in que right now, and one of them I think should be a PR for me, and put me in the top 10 of that segment, so I really want to get it uploaded. I see there is another update available from the app store, but I am nervous that if I update without syncing my rides, I might loose them. Should I try updating?
That update does not fix the problem. I lost 2 more rides when I did the update, hoping it had been fixed. When the update was done, my failed rides were gone with it. Submit a request for help as the problem is still not yet fixed.
Same for me. Upgraded to version 2.2.0 on Android. Can no longer upload rides - gives the cannot write output and also says no internet connection (when there is).
This has happened to me periodically on an iPhone 4 with iOS5.1.1 ever since Strava 3.0 came out. So it doesn't look Android-specific. My message says "Upload FInished with Errors", and invites me to tap again to try again. No amount of tapping helps. I know that I will lose the data completely if I log out, so won't try stuff like that.
I submitted a help request.
I've now solved my problem. When I upgraded I moved the app to the SD card. Moving it back to phone memory sorts the upload.
Did a blitzing ride last night and no matter what I do, it won't upload from my iphone 4. Tried rebooting, everything that I've found in threads etc. NNNnoooooo
Can someone help i have just started using Strava and i am also having problems from a Galaxy sII with uploading the ride to Strava? The App is on the phone memory and i keep receiving a failed message?
Hello all -

Grrrrr @ .. I'm bored .. I have the same problem lately and this is the third race that I can not go up .
Can anyone help me? .. Not like losing my travels. :(
Same error. Failed Sync, upload with errors. - Crap App.
Traveled to Perth, did good ride with group and lost the ride on Strava, now have no record of this long hill session :-(
very dissapointing. Smart Phone apps arnt hard, shouldnt fail on simply data base file upload ! Who's writing this stuff ?
Better still - who's evaluating it ?
there doesn't seem to be a way to retrieve or re-upload. just lost a century today =-(
So I have lost a few commutes. No big deal since I know the distance and approx time. But today I lost a big ride. KOM's and all. The original app did just fine as a recording tool. No frills, fast to open and use. Why not two apps, one for recording only and then a browser app. Integration seems to be the big problem.
Happens to me too, about 5-10% of the time. Sometimes it says "uploading" for a very long time, sometimes it immediately says "data sync failed" and forgets about the ride. Why doesn't the app cache rides to local storage until it's sure it's been uploaded?
This happens to me out of the 17 runs I can see on my activity feed it failed 3 times. It also failed previously. This is very very unreliable. Like Neil Fornter, sometimes I see "uploading" for a very long time and sometimes it immediately says "data sync failed", but both cases it loses the data. I've looked in /data/data/com.strava.run and isn't obvious there is a file that contains the data (running CM9.1 on Galaxy S). Can't the app keep the data until is has been confirmed being on the server. Is there any chance that this major bug be fixed? Otherwise I'll have to find another app.
Found my internal SD card was full. Deleted stuff. My only run since then has uploaded successfully. Hopefully that has fixed the problem. A clear error message that is persistent (e.g. in the sync indication just below the main bar) is required to indicate the failure cause so the user can fix it.
That's it I'm quitting Strava, I've lost countless rides, including some really fast and long rides. Going to switch over to MapMyRide.
FWIW, this hasn't happened to me in a while, so I suspect that a recent update has fixed my specific problem. I have stopped using a backup tracker because Strava seems to be reliable now.
same thing here. HTC android. upload failed. Ride is gone. No obvious file on the phone. So if the synch fails, the ride is gone ?
Same here. Just got a HTC Desire HD as a temporary phone. Factory reset it, installed Strava, went for a ride... It failed to sync my ride and there's no sign of any file on the device. I would have expected a gpx or similar file to be on the device until it had successfully been uploaded. I have used Strava loads on my old Orange San Diego and never had this problem, so I'm wondering if it's something on particular devices that's different?
Same here, Unable to sync after ride, this happened to me on a Samsung Galaxy note 2 with Full Signal and latest Strava version, enough to make me cancel premier membership and find another app that works 100%.
I have opened a ticket last night and still no response.
Same here today. What's worst is I busted a gut, out of the saddle up 20% hills, first time I've ever done this particular ride under the hour - dammit!
I got a response from support a couple days later. They emailed me a link to my ride and it was in my account. I asked how I can recover from a local file, so I'll see what the response is ( should take a few days... I know how support goes). If paying for a premier account saves the file locally to avoid any synch issue I would do it. anyone else ?
I have gotten a few upload errors only to discover I had shut off the GPS (Something I do to save the battery and my privacy!). Today I got the error but the GPS was enabled. Hopefully support can retrieve it for me. Not the end of the world for a free app. But we all just want things to work don't we? ;) Its motivating me so thats a good thing.
this happened to me today. finished my run. hit save. it said error processing and not a trace of the run anywhere. had to manually enter the data. :(
possible it's something to do with the new update? i notice in the last few days more people are commenting here. anyone? i'm assuming the data for the run is lost, anyone have any ideas?
Mine data is not lost as it says I have an activity to update. It just does not complete the update. Maybe their server is down? I'm not logging out until its saved!
wish i could have done the same. it said error in my notification bar, i clicked it, the ride data was gone! :( i DONT want this to happen again!
Update! My ride uploaded yesterday. I've been sitting on it in the cache with 'Upload Finished with Errors'. Out of the blue it uploaded properly. Don't know what they did as my support service request has not been addressed. But as it uploaded I'm cool. Hopefully its just a glitch and does not happen again.
Well i was doing a 45 mile route and 25 mile in i got a punchure i saved my ride, i then viewed my ride just after saving it which showed i done 25.02 miles in 1hr 20 mins with an avg of 19mph which is great, after sorting my bike out i started another recording then set off, when i reache home i saved my second ride after that uploaded i viewed it and i was happy to get a KOM , so i checked my Powerbar challange to see home my KM i had left and some how my first ride is not showing now on Strava records, Im really annoyed as ive 55 miles to complete rather than an easy 30, Anyone any ideas how this happened, i have e-mailed Strava but had no reply
My fucking ride has gone too. I was re-naming the ride and boom. Fucking thing has crashed. Damn shit.
Hi, cannot strava for Android cannot upload my ride, what have I do to save my track?
Yet another android strava app. When I went to record a ride earlier tonight, it told me one wasn't uploaded, then after tonight's ride, it just cycles from "syncing 1 activity" to "1 activity unsync'd activity" and this has been going on for about 4 hours now. I even restarted my phone and it's still happening..
Tried uploading the .gpx manually from my phone, it tells me the time data is missing. Downloaded it from someone who didthe same ride where it did post correctly, of course that one won't post either since it strips the time data. What can be done to get it to accept the ride?
had the same issue as Cameron- pulled the gpx files and they were missing time data.
now my phone has started doing this with every ride, it's stuck. I just rode again earlier and it wont upload, same problem.
running on android.
