Great news, runners: your new run activity page on Strava.com is now live. We spoke to tons of you about what is important when viewing your activities and those of others, and have incorporated your needs and experiences as runners into this new page. 

Some of the new features:

  • Social Bar: We added a social bar to the top of the page, putting your activity title, description, comments, kudos, Instagram photos, and other athletes on your run front and center.
  • Sharing Module:  Easily share your run to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, email, or embed in your blog from the sharing module located at the top, left-hand corner of the page.
  • Key Stats: Distance, time, average pace and elevation are located between the Social Bar and Elevation & Performance Chart. Your mile/km splits from your run are located on the right-hand side of your activity map.
  • Top Results: Get a snapshot of your achievements for the run, including any goals you have accomplished, PRs for best efforts, and segment achievements. 
  • Elevation & Performance Chart: We’ve vastly improved the visual interaction for reviewing and scrubbing all your activity details. Use the cursor to look at your pace, elevation, grade adjusted pace and grade at any point during your run.
  • Premium Analysis: We've rolled out changes to the Pace analysis and distribution, including the new analysis specific to a race. Now you can designate a run activity as a "Race" and get interactive and granular data such as race splits and projected finish times. 
  • Segment Efforts, Stats & Comparison: We’ve optimized the Segment Efforts within your activity so you can quickly scan your most meaningful achievements. We display key stats of your effort along with your leaderboard ranking. And when you’re looking at another athlete’s segment effort, you’ll be able to compare your PR against theirs.

Some of the changes: There are aspects of the run activity pages that are not currently available, with some of these aspects scheduled to return, redesigned, at a later date:

  • Viewing the Performance Chart with 'time' as the x-axis: The new performance chart is set with 'distance' as the x-axis, and we plan to re-add the option to switch to 'time' in the near future (coming soon). 
  • Lap data from a Garmin device: Will now be visible underneath the Segments view in the left sidebar for Free and Premium users.
  • Segment Comparison: The ability to compare your segment effort with your PR and/or the CR for the segment has been removed, and will return after a redesign incorporating the features from http://raceshape.com/.
  • Run "Score": The run intensity score that appeared previously under the Analysis tab is no longer available, but will return when the calculation is more accurate. 
  • GAP for mile splits: We're currently working on our algorithm for GAP. Once the algorithm is improved, GAP split data will be displayed on our new Premium Pace & Race Analysis pages.
  • Best Efforts: The technology available used to generate Best Efforts was not up to our high standard of accuracy. Due to this, we will continue to display any PRs you receive for the next few weeks, but then we will turn off Best Efforts in its current form. Over the next few months, we'll continue to explore innovative and relevant ways to bring this feature back to all users once it has reached our high standards of accuracy. We apologize for this change.

Some Known Issues:

  • FIXED Performance Issues: We're hard at work improving the performance issues that have been reported. Improvements coming soon.
  • FIXED Hidden Segments: Hidden segments will be re-adding this week (we still need to add the ability to hide and unhide segments)
  • FIXED Elevation Correction for your Run: Will be re-added very soon.

How can I see my Best efforts such as 5k or 10k times now, they seem to no longer be available?

Looks great!  Are manual lap times still available, though?  They used to be in a "Laps" tab next to segments, but I can't find them anymore.

The new layout and elevation/performance graph are great. But I have the same question as David A. above -- where are lap times? Those are crucial for interval workouts and the like.

I'd also like to be able to see the best efforts. I want to look at my 10K PR which I set in a half marathon, and I can't seem to do that anymore.

Ditto other comments, need lap times and run PRs.  Laps are critical to my runs as I separate out my true run and cool down.  Lastly, not sure it's specific to the new page, but I'd also like to see a stack ranking of by run times (PR and others) similar to how I can see all my Bike segment times.

The "unpopular" segments no longer show up.  First off the classification of "most popular" segments seamed arbitrary before but at least they were a link away.  Now they are no longer to be found on the activity page.

Strava also got rid of all elevation data, the main data I am interested in.  There is no longer total elevation gained or elevation per mile.  Strava literally just crippled itself with this one.  This update has done nothing but make me look at the alternatives to Strava.

I agree - this redesign removes lap details (which is the thing I use most for run workouts) and a lot of other useful data mentioned above. I'd much prefer this data over the oversized maps. I really don't want to have to switch from Strava!

Like the new UI but I see 2 features that appear to have been removed?

-How do we correct elevation?

-It used to be possible to click and drag a selection of the elevation/performance graph, this is no longer possible?

So let me get this straight, this "upgrade" has made the following changes:

-Made the UI "slicker", but not more functional

-Removed highlighting (in green) of the segments from the display.

-Removed the ability to zoom in on sections of the activity.

-Removed the time x-axis until "some date in the future".

-Removed the lap functionality and put it behind a paywall (Premium).

-Removed segment comparison until "some date in the future".

-Removed Run Score until "some date in the future".

-Removed the GAP split data and put it behind a paywall (Premium)

-Removed the Run Best Efforts (which worked fine) until "some date in the future" if ever.

How exactly is this an upgrade that us runners would want? Especially after you "spoke to tons of you about what important when viewing your activities and those of others". I'm just at a loss for how this is anything but a ploy to push people to premium.

Having issues with the new run page on a Mac/Safari - when the page loads it "freezes" while the data loads into the pace chart at the bottom, or at least that seems to be what is causing it to freeze.  The longer the run the longer the freeze.  For a 22 mile run the page froze for about 30 seconds before I could click any buttons etc.

- The pace analysis have selected an arbitrary section of my run, for which you get fastest/average/slowest with no way to change the selection? 

- No slicing and dicing of the performance chart

"Lap data from a Garmin device: A new take on Laps will be released in the next week or so and will be located in the Premium Analysis section. In addition, we're currently working on a new Premium "Workout" view that will give you both visual and tabular views into your workout. We expect to finish this work within the next month or so."

Good job, one of my needs was go to Premium, bravo!

finding the "upgrade???" disappointing.  The design for the Elevation and Performance graphs is terrible.  The rescale according to what information is displayed and as there is no scale on the y axis apart from m you can't tell what is going on.  Worse than that they change their zero point in the y axis depending on what is shown.

 

For example... look at the attached .png   What's going on with my HR ?  Looks to me that it starts nearish zero ? and quadruples...no, in fact only varies by about 20%.

totally useless. 

At least give us a y axis scale or better still make the y scale start at zero.

Back to Garmin Connect until this is fixed

Some first impressions (free version), most of them are not positive :(
- Map is just too small vertically
- Perhaps because of this I can see only six kilometer splits
- HR and pace disappeared from the automatic km split table (right to the map). I preferred the old table view with all data inside
- Segments view: Missing the avg pace, heartrate, grade% in the table view. These are seen only when I select the segments one-by-one. Why clicking so many times?
- VAM is missing from this version
- Selection (zoom) does not work for me on the elevation and performace graph

for the future:
- Elevation Plus _and _ elevation minus would be nice (e.g. within a km lap or in a segment)

Hi,

 

I think there is quite a bit of lost functionality now with this page. You may be trying to push users to the premium membership but you will loose many more from the freemium side of things as you dont offer anything better than garmin connect.

 

- One of the best functions I enjoyed was the ability to select a part of the course on my own and others graphs to go to a small section (such as seeing what a friends heart rate was over a climbing section of a route we did)

- The graphs arent overlayed any more, this makes them smaller

- Highlighting of where the segments are has been removed

 

Is there a way we can continue to use the old page in the interim until you have completed the new platform? I know agile is the new way of developing software but this is several steps backward it seems...

Ouch!!!

Please, please don't do this to rides - works just great as it is - this 'upgrade' is pretty useless...much less user friendly - more clicks needed to see leaderboards for instance. 

It's very slow and freezes on Mac/safari.

This upgrade has removed many of the things I found useful or fun about Strava for runs.  I've been pushed to use Training Peaks, Beginner Triathlon and (ugh) even back to Garmin Connect to look at/analyze my swim data.  Now I have to do the same for my runs (try analyzing a 10x400m track workout - which is something, for instance, runners actually do, with this "upgrade").  If I have to use other sites to view/review/analyze two of the three sports in which I participate, I am leaning toward discontinuing my Strava Premium account.

So, this feels almost like a push to both get people to buy Premium and/or get runners off the site in favor of cycling (which I also do and like Strava for, just not sure it's worth the hassle of uploading to SO many sites to see what all else I do).

Hard to believe that this is what runners (and I consider myself a fairly representative runner) actually asked for.

Strava, what say you?

I posted below at http://blog.strava.com/now-available-premium-pace-analysis-5888/ but also adding here to keep all such comments together and also because feel you have got this a bit wrong as want to be sure you see all the comments.

 

I'm normally all for change but this change seems to have taken out more things than put in and am really disappointed with it. If you asked tons of runners, strange that so many here seem disappointed. Wish I was asked!

The main reason I liked Strava is segments and the social element of going for CRs. Plus it changed the way I do some interval sessions as now the intervals were the segments and the bits in between recovery. This change seems to have relegated segments and particularly segment analysis to minor features and reverted to a traditional view of a run as an even effort. I can happily go to Garmin Connect for that. If you are going to take that approach with the cycling pages it will be even worse as those guys like to have tea breaks and all sorts!

Where, for instance, can we now find:
Heart rate profile in a segment.
Visual of segments through a run - helps to know where they are and where you might want to add ones to fill gaps.
Comparison "dot racing" with leader and/or your previous runs.
Big maps - the ones with the segments are tiny and there is no full screen option.
Lap splits (e.g. from Garmin) (TG: looks like this may be rectified shortly)

Tonight I did a 10 mile run but hit a 1.7 mile segment hard in the middle to try and take a CR. Mile splits are then meaningless as I just was not running even effort through the run but that's really all I am seeing in this new release.

On the overview graph, why do I have to turn on HR and cadence to see them. If I did not want to see these I would leave the things off! Separating the graphs might be "clean" but then much harder to say compare speed and GAP. Now they just look the same.

i tried the race analysis on my last 10K. The race analysis is quite nice but again seems to imply a traditional view of an activity starting and stopping gun to tape. With segments you could include some warm up and down in one activity and not be too worried about it as you could use a segment to capture to race part plus I found it was annoying to miss your Strava 10K PB when the GPS distance was a fraction short and so best to include a bit extra.

This really does suck the big one. Just smacks of Style Over Function. 

If this is implemented for cycling I think a lot of cyclists will hate the fact that the segment leaderboards have been downgraded to basically a second tier feature, for many they are the reason Strava they use Strava and not another site.

Long live the leaderboards, without them Strava, as we know, is finished, and we're left with a fancy Garmin Connect. Noooooooooooooo!

Thanks for chiming in! Some answers to your questions and feedback:

  • To expand the map while in the 'Overview' of a run, mouse over the three scroll bars under the map, and click and drag down. You can expand the map vertically as much as you would like. 
  • You can now find your average heart rate for the run activity underneath the Performance Chart.
  • Average Heart Rate for each Segment Effort analysis is also available on the right hand side underneath average pace for the Segment Effort. In the Segment Effort performance chart, heart rate data will appear in the window when scrubbing (dragging the mouse along the graph) but will not appear as a line in the chart. 
  • You can still get a visual of where a segment occurs in a run: When you click on a segment the map will highlight the segment in blue, as it did before.  

Michael: I will ask about elevation correction, and see original article post for info on Performance chart zoom. 

Brett: Calories for your runs will be returning soon. 

Jacob: When zooming on the Premium Pace Analysis, you can move the zoom section by clicking and dragging the box just below on the elevation chart. 

Andrew: Overall elevation gain is coming back shortly. 

Ferenc: You can expand the map - see above. VAM is a cycling feature only!

Findlay: Performance chart zoom to select a portion of your run is coming soon. See above - we do still show where segments are on the map if you are in the 'Segments' view. 

Rob & Mark: What version of Safari are you running? Are the new run pages still slow?

Matthew: interval workout features are in the works!

Tim: The segment comparison view has been removed, as well as Garmin lap splits. You can see the information at the beginning of this article for more explanation.

Yes pages still slow - Safari 6.0.2 and Chrome 26.0.1410.65 both on Mac OSX 10.8.2

It is the chart at the bottom of the page, the rest of the page freezes while that chart is loading. If you toggle on/off any of the metrics like HR it freezes again while that metric loads.  Also you have a UI issue with those toggle buttons in Safari - toggle one off and the button isn't rendered correctly.

Surprised this all got through your testing!

Yep exact same here, Safari 6.03 on Mac OSX 10.8.3 - unusable...test, test and test surely.

Again, please don't bring this interface over to cycling, it's REALLY horrible how the segments are now like a hidden feature.

OK apologies I missed the section of stuff you have taken out for a revamp so hopefully some of my concerns will be come to nothing.

The stuff you took out could work better for sure but I would have preferred the new style to be a "preview" and so kept the old style available until your work was further advanced as the missing stuff was useful most of the time. Kind of now looks like we are paying for a beta product at best.

Dammit Strava. I am a mountain runner, and I explicitly use VAM with running to monitor my vertical performance. IT IS NOT JUST APPROPRIATE TO CYCLING.  On top of this you take out the elevation and GAP from the splits.   I've been a huge advocate of Strava, I have tens of pages of CR's, mostly vertical mountain peaks. I have taken onboard your system and loved it - i've got many mountain runners on board. And now you have just destroyed it, because YOU DO NOT GET that there are different ways people run. This is just for road running, flat running. I HATE IT, and this is the first time I fell out of love with Strava. BRING BACK VAM

Further to my previous comment. Here is a mountain runners case study of how I used the platform:

See this segment, it was a huge climb with a VAM of 1163 - indicating my climbing performance rate per hour: http://app.strava.com/segments/2085483

On a shorter segment, I put out a higher effort that would have been unsustainable over a full hour. The VAM calculation for this segment show more of my "Peak climbing Speed" in a shorter vertical climb: http://app.strava.com/segments/1335800

These are useful calculations for me, I can do hill repeats on segments and see my VAM. I know that if I hit a VAM over 1500 I am climbing fast. These are goals I try to reach. Thankfully those segment pages still exist, but there is no way to find them anymore from the run pages. I only found them by looking at my CR's page.

I have been using Strava to as a vertical racing tool and I have been using VAM to calculate my performance increases. In one foul swoop you just obliterated all usefulness of your platform to I guess a smaller niche part of running, but is hugely popular in Europe and becoming more popular in the USA. Do a search for Vertical Kilometre Races and see how popular that is!!

How am I to rate my climbing performance now?  Looks like I have to calculate it all by hand. *sigh*

Strava I know you are all predominently cyclists. I know how VAM is so important to hill climbing cyclists. Imagine if that was taken away from you - imagine the uproar. Imagine the devastation amongst all the hill climbers who have no way to gauge their climbing speed efforts.

Now you may begin to know how all us mountain runners feel today!!!!!!!!!

I recently started using the freemium version of Strava and am a bit bummed out about the latest update. I understand some features will be returning (albeit some are becoming premium features), but taking these options away before new options are ready is not a great move, IMHO. Big loses for me are the lost of Garmin lap data (many of my workouts are interval workouts) and segment features.

Both of these are BIG issues for me as they basically make Strava nearly useless to me. I guess I can hang on and consider premium ( I would get it right now if it would allow lap data back!), but you have to give me options soon or will be back to Garmin Connect  or one of the other numerous options that are out there. That's just how this particular market works.

Again no lap data = loss of personal tracking for me.

Loss of segment comparison = the social aspect (one of the main reasons I joined Strava) is gone.

A stated earlier, for me it was a free app, so no huge loss - but if I was a premium user, I might be upset at having to use to what amounts to an under construction beta version of something that seemed to be working fine. Thank you for what has been a great product and please reconsider some of these changes!

I know the "Best Efforts" might not meet your standards, but it was still a good gauge. It says you will bring it back when it meets your High Standards, just a thought, but I don't mind if its not exact, just a good guesstimate was ok. When I care, Im in a race and already get a Official Time.

I also already miss being able to see the Distance in the MouseOver for the "Elevation & Performance Chart". It had helped me at times to get an idea of distances from previous runs, to better plan out my long runs, but with out creating a whole bunch of Segments that I will not care about in the future.

Thanks for a great site either way. Im only a Freebie user, so I guess take it with a grain of salt.

As it stands I'm unlikely to use the service for free and I'm sure as hell not going to pay for it based on some of the statements in the first post.

Have just tried the page on the iPad, unusable for me, totally locked up safari while trying to load the data into the chart, had to hard restart the iPad. I'm in the UK so have some greater latency to your data but page should be able to cope with that. Ouch.

FWIW working fine on the ipad here in the UK..........still very disappointed with the change. I'm sure the guys and girls at Strava understand that just because they are/were ahead of the game doesn't mean that things can change very quickly.........remember MySpace (tumbleweed). If they make the same change to rides then I'll be chasing a refund of my premium membership fee.

From what I've read here, I believe that if these 'upgrades' are implemented for cycling, and I've seen nothing to believe they won't be, it will be a disaster for Strava. I don't want to see that, I love it as it is!

Big performance issues Mac OSX 10.7.5 Both Safari and Firefox. The new page takes a long time to load. When it does 1-2minutes latter, I'm not a fan of what I'm seeing. I liked the lap times better with the GAP showing. Fix the performance issues with Mac OSX.

I agree with the majority, how is this an upgrade when you have removed everything we loved about STRAVA to some crappy no funtional program.  Please just return to the OLD version.  The comment from another unhappy member below sums it up and its all about $$$$$:

The new version is also telling me its not compatible with my browser, I have internet explorer.  Please tell me the version of internet explor that it supports and a download link for upgrading to the latest version.

The new upgrade looks pretty horrible IMO, and it doesn't seem to add anything worthwhile.

Mainly, how can you take away laps?  That's like not showing average pace for the run.  If I can see it on my device then I should be able to see it on Strava.  Come on guys...

I have seen a post somewhere (maybe on FB) saying a similar new look for the cycling pages is also coming soon. Please Strava think again. I have never seen such a set of unequivocal similar negative comments for a software release. I really love Strava and have just paid for premium but this change feels like its going to backfire bigtime if people signing up for premium don't know what their getting or whether what they have may get taken away in the future without warning. At least give premium users who paid for a defined product the choice to continue using the old system.

Also I thought i'd discovered a way around the small map problem using the expansion bar underneath the map on the overview page. Yippee I thought - Its just me not having learnt the new interface yet. The problem is that the new system requires me to move away from the overview page to look at segments and the map size has reset back to a small map when I go back to the overview page.

Can you shrink the elevation access, runners don't have 200m elevation gains typically and I doesn't look like I've done much on hill workouts.

The Strava person commenting that VAM is only for cyclists obviously hasn't read the starva pop-up glossary:

VAM measures your Vertical Ascent in Meters/hour — it measures how quickly you are traveling upward. VAM is useful for comparing your effort on different hills and segments, and is used by both cyclists and runners. To get a high VAM score, grades between 6-10% generally present the best opportunity to ascend quickly, as they are steep enough to avoid wind, and gradual enough to allow unrestricted motion.

I don't do hills but I would have thought a lot of fell runners would find this useful.

The performance issues are not platform specific.  Look at a long run in chrome and use the "developer tools" to look at how much it is loading (gzip, meh..) and how slow; chrome shows you the load time and total data transferred / total http requests, etc.  For example a random one of my long run activities, I am seeing 82 HTTP requests for 3.7MB transferred (note that is with cache, so on a fresh load it could be more) and an 18 second load time, which is almost completely attributed to a call to /activities/<activity_id_here>/streams ( call that took 13+ seconds to pull a 3.2MB blob of jscript for the browser javascript engine to then chew on.. or choke on, as the case may be).  

Also Strava is simply throwing money away on Amazon Web Services bandwidth and largely helping ruin end user experience due to simple poor server configuration; if you look at the chrome developer tools "audit" tab for your long run activity, it says among other things: "Compressing the following (20) resources with gzip could reduce their transfer size by about two thirds (~1.3 MB)".  That is a simple HTTP server configuration change Strava should make and Strava would save 2/3 of that money, whatever it is (guessing a lot), simple right there. To put my 3.7MB of Strava run activity javascript/data in context, that is about six times the size of the biggest .FIT, GPS source data file I have, which is only 626KB.

How do I correct the altitude for a run now? Affect all pacings when wrong so very important when rubbish data is uploaded. Need to be available.

The format and layout is terrible, same as so many other sites and programs seems to be heading for. Everything is too big, boxy and plain.

I found you can get the old interface back if you change the activity type to Hike or Walk. Not sure how this affects leaderboards though,  but useful to get back your old data and record down before Strava take this away completely.

Awful update. The visual details might be pretty slick but the *design* is demonstrably worse since usability has been thrown out the window: related items are no longer visually placed together (e.g. placing "segments" in the completely separate sidebar navigation block, putting "comments" in the boxed-off activity titlebar),  and crucial information has been made inaccessible -- where did elevation gain per lap go? And GAP for that matter? Please revert to the old usable design and take some time to try again.

Hi, I'm missing quite some stuff since the new update.
Several things were already mentioned but I would like to see some work done on the axes of the charts. Now the pace and heart rate just show as a line but it is annoying you can only know the exact number on a certain place when hovering over the graph. You should implement some horizontal guide lines. (HR 150, HR 160, etc...) I'm also missing the green pace comparison bars and moreheart rate info. I liked strava more then garmin connect but not so sure now

Just had a look at http://app.strava.com/activities/45157178 in Safari with web inspector on - the js activity manifest took 31.05 seconds to load - http://d26ifou2tyrp3u.cloudfront.net/assets/strava/labs/activity_ma... - Doesn't look like it took much time to download it was Safari processing it that took the time (I think).

I like that the map in the activity view is vertically expandable, though it is not obvious that you can do that.  It would be good to have that on all Strava map views where possible.  But the default "wide and low" shape seems strange.

I have to switch on heart rate every time I visit that page.  It would be helpful to remember the setting.

It's a pity the segments are not highlighted in the activity graph and are only listed when you click on the left.  Then you get a tiny map that is not expandable.  After clicking a segment (using Firefox browser) there is no option to show a heart rate graph.  There is something buggy about the heart rate that Elle says should be shown in the data beside the mouse when "scrubbing".  In fact it is only visible if you switched on heart rate in the main activity view.

A bug on those graphs when "scrubbing" in Firefox.  When I move the mouse to the right, it leaves vertical black lines all over the graph until I move the mouse away from the graph.

If important features are moved to premium version, maybe you should consider a lower price or two levels of premium membership.  Most people are not premium users, partly because it's really quite an expensive annual charge for use of a website.  If fifteen dollars per year got you quite a few features you might get more sales.

Seriously, you should just roll back to the previous version of strava run, and forget about "upgrading" strava bike ... we all make mistakes ... nytimes.com, FB, instagram all got too "impatient" at some point and had to adjust, it's ok ... or you can become more of a niche product and that is ok too, we're all free to go wherever we want :-)

It's everything but obviously not an upgrade. Having new functions for the Premium members is a good idea to keep people having interests in Premium. But it's ridiculous that the "lap function", the simplest thing on a timing watch, become Premium.

Not sure if I like the new run setup.  Its harder to look at and get info from the data.  Old version was easy and user friendly which I feel was a big appeal for most strava users.  Its getting alittle complicated the way the data is presented with too many links to clicks (ie geting to segments).  The interface before worked well and sometimes its better not to tinker too much with a good thing.

Here is rising ultra star Sage Canaday's run in today's Lake Sonoma 50 miler.  The performance in loading the graphs and segments is SO BAD that even my high performance computer struggles to load it all: http://app.strava.com/activities/48673045

In fact its basically unusable. I could not get an overview of Sage's efforts on all those segments in one view, but I had to click on each segment. I gave up after three segments because it was so slow. This is awful.

Strava this upgrade is going to be a platform killer unless you roll it back.  If you push this on cyclists, your company is going down the tubes with it! sadly :'(

Not sure about the look at all - but maybe that is just "change" and we'll get used to it. However I do have a problem if the data that is presented is incorrect.  On the new Pace Analysis page my average pace per km for today's run is plotted - this is good. BUT on the bar chart version my last km is shown as being the fastest (correct) whilst on the line graph version it is shown as the slowest (wrong) - how can this be? Two different interpretations of the same data.

Other things that bug me at first look - the zoom function on the pace analysis chart seems to always jump to the section centred around the mid-point of a run, with no way to scroll to before or after this part, so basically why did you bother making this function?

Also, having to turn on the little switches  for heartrate and cadence each time you go to look at a run - can't these be a preference? And what's with the scale? I live in a very flat place and don't need a 200m vertical scale. Actually I don't really care about elevation at all but that's the unchangeable vertical axis measurement that I get.

I'd rather be able to change the vertical axis or at least have some visual clues on the values for things like pace when glancing at the chart without having to scrub along and try to interpret the detailed numbers which continuously change way too fast to be easily meaningful. 

Lastly, something that I really wanted in the old UI, and which has not been added in this version - the ability to go straight to "next run" or "previous run" from any particular run page.  A simple pair of back and forward arrows somewhere would save a lot of clicking.

Hopefully this is a 'work in progress' and not a definitive new interface...

I agree with so many of the issues here... the new run page is just not an improvement.  I see no new functionality, and a lot of functionality made less easy to read or removed altogether.  Glad to hear about the switch to "hike" as a segment type - I will likely do that for now.  If premium had a scalable y axis, the old CR system, and the old layout... THAT I would pay for.

I really don't understand why you would change an interface that was so good (and it seems popular) so radically only to make it LESS usable. Imagine Photoshop doing that.

As said above it's also incredibly SLOW to load and does freeze on Macs.

I've never seen such a backward step in a user interface. I HATE IT PASSIONATELY! 

PLEASE GO BACK TO THE OLD VERSION.

This totally unusable on Chrome 26 on Windows as well. The bottom right panel freezes the entire screen whilst loading. Drilling down on a single segment freezes the whole page. I used to jump around to check leaderboards for many segments per run/ride and now I can't. Please sort it out and in the meantime - don't change the mobile app. Or just move back to multiple pages for information rather than trying to put everything on one page.

I guess it takes some time to get used to the new UI, but what has frustrated me is that on Safari / Chrome it seems to get stuck and I have to cancel out of the page and start again. I was going to comment on the missing Intensity, but I read that this will be re-introduced and more accurate, which is a good thing.

1. Full page Google map (or better the topo openstreet map / cycle map) should be reintroduced.

2. The GAP needs to be reintroduced

3. It would be nice if you didnt have to open up a separate view for comments

I suspect there is some serious de-bugging to do.

Agree with James Stewart and others about performance. Don't you dare roll this out to cycling (where I load on average 10 rides a week and want fast processing and analysis). I did a 50M run yesterday and I can't even get the map to load in less than 4 minutes, clicking on anything causes my browser to crash. When will this be fixed please? Quickly please otherwise I want my premium membership fee.

Not the best "upgrade" so far, not even sure an upgrade was required... It's like an upgrade back to Garmin connect.

Hopefully the features already discussed in this forum will come back soon or just roll back the interface till you fix them.

I used Strava for the features below:

  • Segment Comparison vs myself or others
  • Best Efforts (It works more than fine, why not putting it back till you release a more accurate version)
  • It would be good to have a central page to see and compare all Best Efforts, not just the few we had before
  • Also at the moment it's missing the unpopular/hidden segments 
Garmin Connect does the below and that's a must have:
  • Estimated Calories and Total Elevation Gain for the Run (already back)

  • Viewing the Performance Chart with 'time' as the x-axis
  • Lap data from a Garmin device.

And also the interface is slooow.

The new interface looks nice I guess but I couldn't really get a chance to use it - my first upload was a 50 mile run and the page chokes so badly that it's unusable. http://app.strava.com/activities/48668285

I get spinning pinwheels for 15-20 seconds, then a "Script is Unresponsive" message, then pinwheels, then unresponsive script, etc. etc.
Running Firefox 20.0 on OSX 10.6.8.

I thought this might just be an issue with my activity, but it never used to be this bad with long runs (>30 miles) and it sounds like a lot of other people are having similar complaints so I'll add mine to the mix.

I tried to open it, but it took 10 minutes (!) to show up, although it takes 80% of the CPU and >120MB of memory...

Then I tried to enable HR data and it took another 12 minutes (!), still using 80% of the CPU and now >160 MB of memory.

Using Win7, 64-bit, with Google Chrome v. 26.0.1410.64 m.

Just FYI - if you log out you can see data in the old format.

I don't completely freeze but it takes a while for the page to catchup. I'm using Chrome, Win7, Core I7 3610QM, 16GB of RAM and GeFoce GTX 675M w/ 4GB of available memory so I'm pretty sure it's not my hardware...

Did a segment interval session this PM. It is now tortuous to see how I did.

The overview has no time axis so I can't see how long I was resting for.

Getting to the segment leaderboard seems to take a load of clicks

Can't see my HR in each segment - only point values as I scrub.

Marking the activity as a workout has no obvious effect - or this another "coming soon" feature?

I actually got 6 CRs on this session so not sure how 4 of them are selected as "Top" ?

"Pace analysis" would be OK for a steady state run but not much use for intervals and there is no heart rate overlay

Really hard to understand why you are trying to achieve here except p*** off loyal customers and make them look elsewhere? As it is I am off to Garmin Training Center for another look at my data!

It seems pretty obvious what has happened here. Strava has decided to use crowd sourcing to test changes to the interface, by using a small subset of users (runners) and not inflicting the change on the full user base (predominately made up of cyclists) until they have gathered feedback. That's fine, but it is important we all provide clear feedback on how we feel about the change.

I personally miss the ability to see statistics about achievements within a run, such as 400m, 800m, km, mile, 2 miles, 5k, 10k etc.

I also miss the GAP pace being available with the split times, as I found this quite interesting when looking at the way I manage hills during running.

Performance seems to be terrible in a browser, and almost unusable on my Kindle Fire HD.

The uploader no longer recognises my Garmin (support ticket raised).

I haven't used the new interface enough to comment more at this point.

I have not gone through and read all the comments, but my initial impression on the new RUN activity page is that I don't like it.  I think it will grow on me but there is one thing that I really am missing, and maybe it's just that I haven't figured it out yet.  

Before (and like on bike activities) it was very easy to zoom in on a part of a run, by dragging on the graph.  then you got a zoomed in graph and map of only that part.  Then you could easily create a segment, or just study that particular part of the run.  

I will try and figure out how to do this...  Thanks for all the work you do on the site.

From my dashboard on a ride I can access the leaderboard of a segment in 2 clicks - on the new run page it takes 4 clicks to get to see a leaderboard. Why?

Leaderboards are Strava's USP and for sure the main reason Strava stole a lead on the field, hiding them deep inside an activity makes no sense, unless it is a deliberate step to move away from the 'competitive' nature of the site. 

If that happens, I'm pretty sure an alternative leaderboard centric site will appear and users will vote with their feet.

Ran a marathon yesterday, tried to use the new run page to look at my numbers, race analysis page useful visual but really wanted to see HR for each mile - over to Garmin Connect - nice fast loading page, clean, all the data just there in a simple lightweight grid.

To correct the altitude change activity type to walk, correct and change back.

The graph is really buggy and the GAP is complete rubbish. both my last 2 runs have been flat yet the actual pace and GAP are miles apart. The graph also measure HR in metres on the axis, pretty useless.

How about you make it match the stats/layout that is used for the Rides? Everything is in a useable format  it tracks the best efforts, segments, elevation, Average and Max HR, all in a very easy to read format.

 

I've spent money on a premium membership and bought your recommended HR strap, I'd like to "want" to continue using the product I've paid for.

Unfortunately, it's a very laggy update, compared to how things loaded before.  It takes forever to load the map on the activity page and accessing segment pages is more difficult.  Glad to see Strava working on things though.

I would like to see something other than just elevation as a Y-Axis label on the elevation and performance graph. Also I would like the elevation gain by lap. Also, the elevation is not spread throughout the Y-Axis of the graph. It is all compressed at the bottom. The Y-Axis spread does not vary with a varying elevation gain.
