When you add a run or ride to Strava, you may be awarded “Achievements” for outstanding performances on the segments you traverse. There are a few types of Achievements.
"All-Time" vs. "This Year"
Overall awards come in two flavors: "All-Time" and "This Year". The flavors reflect achievement on "All-Time" and "This Year" leaderboards. "This Year" leaderboards reflect performances from the calendar year at time of activity. These leaderboards are not currently accessible via the mobile app — we're working on it! — but are easily accessible on the web.
Crown — King/Queen of the Mountain (KOM/QOM) or Course Record (CR)
The crown represents total segment dominance! They are awarded to users who set times that slot them in atop Overall leaderboards at time of upload.
There are two types of crowns: the solid crown is awarded for top placement on the All-Time leaderboard; the "wire" or "outlined" crown is awarded for top placement on the This Year leaderboard.
Your current All-Time KOM/QOM/CR crowns are stored in a special list on Strava for your reference. "My KOMs" or "My QOMs" is a page stored under "KOMs/CRs" or "QOMs/CRs" accessed from your Profile page on the web.
Trophy — Overall Top 10 Placement (All-Time & Annual)
A trophy is awarded when you place at the top of a segment leaderboard filtered by gender. Trophies exists for 2nd place to 10th place for all-time efforts, and 2nd place to 5th place for yearly efforts.
There are two types of trophies: the solid trophy is awarded for high placement on the All-Time leaderboard; the "wire" or "outlined" trophy is awarded for high placement on the This Year leaderboard.
Medal — Personal Top 3 Placement (All-Time Only)
Medals are awarded for your all-time best personal performances on a segment. If you clock a new best time for yourself on a segment, you'll receive a solid "PR" medal. Likewise for your second fastest and third fastest times.
Note: A user is not eligible for a PR medal until he or she has matched the segment at least two times.
"Too many achievements!" or "What about Annual PRs?"
Generally speaking, All-Time Achievements will always trump Annual Achievements. The complete priority list is: All-time Overall > All-time PR > Yearly Overall.
You ride your favorite local climb and clock in with the Best Time Overall for 2015 (Yearly KOM). It’s also your All Time 3rd Personal Best. In this situation, you will receive a Medal for yourAll Time 3rd Personal Best and not the Trophy for the Yearly KOM.
You ride your favorite local climb and clock in with your All Time Personal Record. It also happens to be the Overall 7th Best of All Time. In this situation, you will receive a Medal for 7th Best of All Time.
If you believe an achievement is missing on one of your rides, Strava Support can help. Simply start a new support ticket and include the URL to your activity.
Achievements are awarded based on your leaderboard position at the time of upload.
Because Achievements do not refresh in real time, if you improve your time down the line, or someone overtakes you in the standings, your previously generated Achievement(s) won't be automatically updated.
If you tie for a KOM/QOM/CR, you will not be awarded a crown and it will not be recorded in the KOM/QOM/CR list.
