I got a little frustrated not being able to find athletes that live around me, so I created this app: http://www.stravafriend.me/

Hi! How about being able to search for athlete by their first name (already avaial.) and then sorted by distance from me?

For example, I search for athlete name Nikita and I want to sort out all Nikita who lives closest to me!  How come this feature was not implemented long time ago?

I can't believe I just spent 15 minutes on the Strava site to figure out a way to follow a buddy I ride with who uses Strava.  In fact I even saw some sort of notification on my phone that he invited me to follow him.

What are you guys smoking?

Hi Natasha, try going to your profile. In the address the url will be something like www.strava.com/athlete/ Give that number to him or better yet, just copy and paste the complete url and give it to him. While he is logged into his acvount, if he visits that same page it will show him your profile page with a request to follow button. Once he does that it will become easy to follow him back. Alternatively he can give you his athlete number. So you can paste it into the url.

Hope this doesn't confuse you and works ok.

ps, Im not a strava employee.

Hey Mathew,

We do have some new search stuff rolling out soon. I'm not sure if it will include region but it should be more accurate.

Any chance we'll be able to search for athletes by region / city any time soon? I'd like to follow a number of cyclists in my city and so far I have to go through every segment and see which ones are recent users, and then follow. Would be great to just type in my city and province (state) and get some results.

Hi Strava users!

Today, we released a new search bar for Athletes on Strava that can be found at the top of any Strava web page.

To use, click on the search icon placed after the Strava logo in the upper left corner of any page, and the Athlete search bar will appear (screen shot attached).

Why this is helpful: Using this simple search bar, you can search for Strava athletes you're following and for friend's your not following. This is also a quick way to see if your friends are already on Strava or whether you need to invite them to join.

I hope this new tool makes it easier to search for friends on Strava.

(To note, a feature similar to this already exists on the Strava apps for mobile, but can only be accessed on your Profile tab)

Thanks!

Find my Facebook Friends on Strava:

a. Login to Strava (web) using your facebook (hopefully to link).

b. Click on "Dashboard" on the top menu.

c. Click on "Invite Athletes to Strava" button located on the right column.

d. Click on Facebook (second tab) located on the left.

Result: You can see your existing friends on Strava and can invite new ones too. It sends them a personal message from you.

Need a geographic search of athletes on Strava.  If you include an "age" filter that would help.

Understatement of the year there Ashley! Can't believe it's so hard to find an existing friend on Strava.

Perhaps move the "athlete search" from the misleading tab of 'Explore', ideally to a 'Search' tab along with Segment and Activity Search?

Hi Folks,

Sorry for the frustration and confusion!  We apologize that this is not easier and appreciate your feedback.

This article does a good job of outlining some of the ways to find your friends on Strava.

Invite Athletes

1) Click on the "Invite Athletes to Strava" button when you see it on your Dashboard, your list of followed athletes, or anywhere else.

2) You can add emails of the friends you want to invite, or select Gmail to browse your Gmail contacts for easy selection.

3) You can also add friends via Facebook: just click on the Facebook icon at the left side of the page. From here you can see all your Facebook friends that are already on Strava, or select those that aren't in order to invite them to join in on the fun.

Athlete Search
You can find friends through the Athlete Search. Just click on “Explore”, at the top of your screen. Then choose “Athlete Search” from the secondary row of tabs. Or simply visit http://app.strava.com/athletes/search.

Additionally, Strava will recomend people you can follow. Look on your Dashboard for the “Who to Follow” list on the right side of the page. Or, from your Profile page, click on “Who to Follow” at the top, and see who Strava thinks might be interesting for you to follow.

Looking for your friends on Strava? Use the Athlete Search to find them.

I agree with the fact that athlete search is far from optimal! Regional search should be one of the search options.

It used to be possible to search by town, I have done it before.  But now, for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it, it just keeps saying there are no athletes with the name of my town.  well, duh!  just try to search for someone when you only recall their first name.  there is no way i am clicking through 300+ pages looking for this person.

I have just started using this app ans am quite pleased with it. recommended it to a friend some miles away who is also using it but for the life of me could not see away to follow him. So thanks to Logan F for the instructions.

But common Strava make it easier, we all do not subscribe to Facebook.

Steve Ball,

If you found her on a segment leader board. You can click on them which will take you to their profile page and then you can click the follow button.

Alternativey, you can search for there name here http://app.strava.com/athletes/search

Another option everyone can try is to ask their friends for there profile number. This can be found in the address bar when you click on your profile. All you need to do is swap the profile number with theirs and this will load their page.

Example is mine http://app.strava.com/athletes/183124

Any idea how to follow a friend I know is on Strava - I've seen her in leader boards - but isn't a Facebook friend of mine? I can't believe it's so difficult to do this. Strava needs a search box at the top like Facebook's.

I can get you part of the way; I can get you a list of your friends that have linked their Strava and Facebook accounts. First you must link your Facebook account from your Strava account settings. Then, click on your account drop down menu and then the "Invite Friends" options. In the middle of the page is a button to "Invite Your Facebook Friends to Strava" - click this. All your friends will be listed, and you have the ability to pare down this list to "Strava Users" by selecting that option in the drop down menu. That will list all your Facebook friends that are using and have linked their accounts to Strava. This won't give you a list of all  your Facebook friends using Strava, but it is a start.

"To the people saying fo to Explore and then use the Athlete Search function - that doesn't really work to achieve what people are asking. It is OK, if you know the name of the person you are looking for and can search by name (although even that sometimes doesn't work!).

If you've got your account connected with facebook it should, for example, be able to show you a list of your friends who are on facebook and have a Strava account. There doesn't appear to be this functionality and I think this is what people would like to see.

I've just had a notification in my dashboard from Strava saying: "Your Facebook friend xxx just joined Strava! Follow them now." This is OK when new people join but what about people who are already members?!"

keith black has nailed it... please strada - how can i find my facebook friends who are using strada?

thanks

To find a friend:  choose "Explore" at the top of the page, then choose "athlete search" then type in the friends name.  As long as you have the spelling correct you should be good to go.  You can also use partial names if you like, but that leads to lots of pages to scroll through.

To invite a friend:  http://app.strava.com/invites/new

Hope that helps!

Can you just ask them for their athlete ID? Then access http://app.strava.com/athletes/<athleteID> and follow.

I'd love an answer to this as well. I have a friend using Strava on an iPhone but doesn't show up anywhere in my "friends to follow" list. The list is mostly pros, even though friends on Facebook who us S don't show there.

I would also find the answer to this question useful.  Is it even possible to find your friends that already have an account?  Or do I have to "invite" them?
