This would mean Strava would support an activity that included multiple sports in one activity page - like a bike to a run, or a swim to a bike to a run, with transitions.
+1 - Think now that Garmin 920xt and newer are creating multisport fit files; Strava, please pick this up as a change, it would seem to be an inevitable one.
Did my first duathlon this morning and was pleasantly surprised by both my result and my having managed to tailor a multisport setting on my Magellan to include both runs, both transitions and the ride. Although it's one .FIT file and the Magellan site recognises it as a multisport activity, Strava doesn't. People may well wonder why I have listed 30 second walks in my activities (one of the transitions), surely triathlon (and duathlon, and aquabike, and aquathlon) is popular enough these days to warrant site support for it? It's not even an app I'm bothered about since my GPS watch does all the requisite recording in the first place.
A further reason for multisport support... I have had the Garmin Edge 500 for years. I commute to work on the bike (15km - 30km total for the day, there and back). I prefer to turn off the device after arriving for work, and then start it up again when leaving for home. It remains as one file; 30km total and doesn't split. There's a massive time gap in the middle of the file but I don't care; it's a commute. I don't pollute the feed of others with splitting that up.However, I recently got the new Garmin Fenix 3. It allows me to "save the ride", "discard", or "return later". I chose to "return later", all well and good. It keeps the same file on garmin; but on Strava it splits the files... sigh.
I believe there is two separate asks here...
1) support multi-sport activity files such as a Garmin fit file from a 920XT that contains all the different multi-sport activities in one file and present them as one event with easily identifyable separate legs and their associated stats like Garmin Connect. At present uploading one of these to Strava splits all the activities to separates, so for a Tri/Duathlon, Strava will show 5 separate activities, rather than one event.
2) Support uploads where the activity file doesn't internally have the various legs separated and user can manually select/tag each leg to appropriate activity type.
For me anyways, #1 is of higher priority
I got a little bored so created this little gist to help split a gpx into multiple uploadable gpx splits
or to view page
Its nothing clever nor pretty but helps me.
Just spotted on the Strava Run facebook feed - "Thanks for the feedback Keith! This type of multi-sport development is not scheduled for 2015, but we know it's a popular request with our users." Really? No progress on this in 2015, yet flagged as an issue which Elle said you were working on in 2012? ???!??!? Really??!??!?
This is how I would implement it - create a new activity type called "Multisport". Then allow the single multi-sport activity to be uploaded, and then a screen similar to the "crop" screen so that the user can mark "Run", "Transition", "Swim", "Ride" etc as portions of the activity. This would then allow the Strava backend to match "run" segments to the run part of the activity, "ride" segments to the ride part etc etc.
This is the one thing (along with adding triathlons as target races for discussions/training etc) that I think would turn me into a premium subscriber
Any ETA for support of multisport activities such as brick, duathlon, triathlon? Garmin Connect has it and that's free whereas I'm a paying member of Strava thou I doubt for long.
Pleased, this is a mandatory feature!! We need to track multi activity file just like Garmin or Suunto do instead of separated activities, please!!!
Strava, whaat is the progress on implementing what every multisport athlete is requiring?
Mandatory feature to track multi activity file just like Garmin does instead of separated activities, please!
Not finding this such an issue, now that you can download the seperate segments from Garmin Connect and upload them individually to Strava. Whole process only takes about 30 seconds.
I loaded the .fit file into Sportracks, it created each segment as a separate activity, I then exported each activity using Sportracks to a gpx file, and manually loaded them into Strava.
You can get Sportracks from zonefivesoftware.com
See attached pic for reference:
Garmin Connect have managed to incorporate multisport into their layout, which looks really nice, and performs well for triathlons.
Saying "There is NO WAY IN THE WORLD Strava or Mapmyride or any other App is going to pay any attention to this problem" is completely untrue, and based off no factual information.
I think Strava will lose a lot of triathletes to Garmin Connect or other websites if they can't rectify this problem.
Just so everyone knows.. You cannot just crop a multi-sport file with strava, just spent the last hour trying to get this figured out (there is NO app out there that will do this except a TXT editor which is LAME sauce). So I found a way you can do this with Strava. NOTE: Strava will not let you re-import the file after the initial cropping due to the date/time stamp being the same as your last import. Here is the work around:
1. Import your file 2. Crop file for first of the tri sports (Run, Bike, Swim). I will start with Swim.
3. Export the newly created croping and save it as something you will remember later (Tri-Swim.gpx)4. Delete the activity.
5. Import the file again
6. Crop the new Sport (Bike)
9. Import the file again
10. Crop the new sport (run)
12. Import the new Cropped file (Tri-Swim.gpx) Name it and select the activity type as swim.
13. Import the new Cropped file (Tri-Bike.gpx) Name it and select the activity type as ride.
14. Import the new Cropped file (Tri-Run.gpx) Name it and select the activity type as run.
The one time I ran a triathlon in multisport mode using my Ambit 2s, it posted to Strava as a single activity-- meaning that my pace stats were all jacked up because my run, swim, and bike paces were different. I blame Suunto since multisport mode on Movescount seems to do the same thing; I have a Garmin 920xt on order and am hoping that its integration with Strava is better.
Would be nice to see a tri race as one file-complete with transitions, uploaded from a proper tri watch. (Similar to what Garmin Connect has done) Or maybe make an app for the new FR920XT that is coming out in November. Now that would be sweet!
I'm not a multi-sport athlete but I've decided to enter a beginner's duathlon this weekend and I stumbled upon this as I thought about how to record my activity. I have a Pebble watch and using an IOS app called 'Run+' (there is a 'Bike+ too) I can start and stop activities via the watch and get pace info on the watch too. So, to separate the cycling from the running, I'm going to use the Pebble integration to record three separate activities during the transition phases. The Bike+ app can auto-post to Strava (but I'll disable this to make the app more responsive) and initially they will all be running activities but it's easy to alter the middle activity afterwards within Strava. I'll lose the transition times but I'm not bothered by that but it would be nice to have an overall elapsed time. this could only happen if there was proper multi-sport support. The swimming, of course, only complicates things further. I agree that the ability to separate activities via the lap feature would be ideal.
Just started the premium 'trial' not sure how to add bricks Bike/Run and how to enter races as a challenge/goal? Also how to upload splits/intervals for swim/bike/run?
+1 this feature, specially since Garmin Connect has it now. GARMIN CONNECT!!!! Strava, you don't want to be outdone by Garmin Connect now do you!?!?!?
I will add that I'd love to see Strava support the swim data from the 910XT
It would be great if Strava could handle Triathlons - even if annotated manually.
Just manually edited the TCX data from London Duathalon.
For anyone else the current Garmin output data is split on laps which I've set to 1km on my watch, if this is enough granularity I can split the data here and add/replace the "Id" tag with same name as first lap starttime. It does make transitions hard to manage though and you get a bit of distance creep due to not being able to mark the transition start end point explicitly. You'll also get some blank splits.
In my opinion the current cropping UI is a great start but rather than start/end crops what is needed is allowing the placement of these multiple tags with some sort of feedback on the map.
I'm tempted to create a little program to parse the file, visualise it ( maybe using processing.js ) for a demo like thing :)
As it is very obvious to anyone who starts this discussion, Strava needs to work with the GPS watches that record MultiSports, and do it well.
Im another,- Suunto Ambit 3 is my beast and Duos, 70.3 and Swimmimg are my concerns. My Suunto is a beast that links to my iPhone with Bluetooth and records and lists all the above options really well
As with everyone else the data is lost or transferred wrong, it is so frustrating that if i was too do an Ironman tomorrow i would NOT use my MultiSport part of my Suunto. NOT EVEN A THOUGHT.
This is made even more frustrating when you Google it and find that this is a base problem that have been around for years. I have contacted Strava (NO RESPONCE) and SUUNTO (responded well but were loathed to admit a problem)
I WOULD NOT THINK THIS IS SOMETHING THAT STRAVA, SUUNTO, GARMIN AND POLAR ect could not solve, BUT IS IS. I DONT HOLD OUT ANY HOPE OF ANYONE FIXING THIS PROBLEM ANYTIME SOON.
As i said to Suunto, you brag about Multisport functions which now include transitions (works great with Movescount (Movescount fails with internet and their site seems to always be down)) and you brag about the auto transfer with Strava, but the inference would be that it works for all sessions NOT JUST RIDES AND RUNS
But good news, at last phone conversation with Suunto i was told that I SHOULD HAVE DONE MY OWN CHECKING FOR THE EXTRA FUNCTIONS THE SUUNTO HAS, to which i replied I DID, I WATCH ALL YOUR ADDS AND INFORMATION VIDEOS. and let me tell you what the inference was !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is badly needed as people tend to add the entire multisport activity as a run, then cycle on running segments and take a load of CRs.
This feature is supported. My 910xt uploads a single multisport activity as seperate swim/bike/run with T1 &T2 activities in Strava. Cheers!
+1 for Strava adding support for Triathlon. Just an additional activity to start with. D.
Would love to see this support for the fenix 2 / 910 XT. Looking forward to the next update!
+1 in this feature
It has 2+ years since this thread started - Why hasn't Strava at least just added "Triathlon" or "Duathlon" to the activity type when you upload an activity? Then you could pick race and be all set...
Matthew White: +1
They just don't care: never got any feedback from Strava , just a big silence..... really disappointing !!!
I was just directed by a support email to add my +1 to triathlon support (triathlon category, 3 split events grouped as one, proper swimming analysis). After 2 years and 3 months, I'm not sure it's worth bothering - but I'm doing as requested and living in hope.
I just started doing triathlons and have just started uploading my training using the iphone app. I bought a garmin 910xt yesterday... but now I read that it is worthless to try to connect it with strava. :(
Strava: Looking back through the forum posts and reading the many positive reviews on the internet I chose Strava as the app to use. I'm surprised you haven't seen the benefit of adding proper triathlon support. Surely it's a smart business move to focus on doing the basic support for triathlons.
Think about it from a business model perspective... if triathletes are constantly struggling to use sub-standard app functions here, battling to do manual text file editing of uploads... that says 2 things:
a) there is no other triathlon app to switch to
b) they are a dedicated and loyal customer market segment.
Think about those 2 facts- then take the smart business move of investing programmer attention away from feature increments for the existing market (who aren't going to churn easily anyway, not after uploading years of data) and capture a whole new segment of users desperate to use something that works. Because the converse is true also. The first app that DOES support triathlons will cause you to lose every frustrated triathlon user in a heatbeat.
Which makes more sense from a business perspective? My guess is to pick up this 2 year old ticket and action it - but you'll have to make your own choice about what's important.
Can any of you upload swim trainings from a suunto ambit2?
If.. How do you do it?
Please support your triathletes!
I have just started to use Strava for tri capabilities and wondered if I should go for the paying option. But looking at the speed how things are improved, I'd rather stay on garmin connect and check again in a couple of years...
2 years of asking still nothing from Strava. We only want to see swims in the weekly hours summary FFS, at the very least it could be an option users could turn on from within the premium panel surely thats not too much to ask for???Keep ignoring paying customters Strava and you're gonna find you start losing people to Garmin Connect, which is about to seriously challenge for your market from where I'm sitting.
It would be great to see my swims in the Activity Summary (since this is definitely a category on a Multisport watch). A 'multisport' or 'race' option would also be great. I appreciate the website updates, you guys seem to be putting in the hours, but the basic functions of a multisport watch exceed the capability of the website. Maybe just taking a look at the foundation of Strava and add the very basics of multisport before adding more whiz-bang stuff. You'd definitely get a wider customer base just by adding a couple very basic features that multisport athletes would pay for!
I would like to see walk as an activity please. I'm 45 and although not over the hill just yet i think Strava could benefit from lots of older members who are getting familiar with smart phones/gps devices/strava app etc. Plus i have uploaded my back strengthening walks this week as runs so i feel a little that im cheating. Thanks :-)
Please work on a solution to accept and breakdown into individual legs for the garmin 910 xt, thanks
With Strava 4 on iPhone we have the convenient button top left to choose a ride or run. Can this not be used to change from run to ride midway recording a session? I tried this yesterday but then the workout paused. This would be awesome as I ride to the mountain, run the trail and ride back home.
Please add 'Multisport' to the sport type options instead of marking my triathlons as 'Ride'.
Please, Strava, add swims in the activity summary! Even just for manual entries. Come on it could not be so difficult!
Having my swims in the Activity Summary would indeed really be a nice upgrade!
Come on Strava sort it out. add Swimming, and spliting events, and then that opens up a whole host of Strava challenge options plus loads more users.
Folks, any news on supporting multisport from Forerunner 910xt?
Yes, 910xt mutilsport support please! We don't need a gold plated Cadillac solution that will take years, with a fancy triathlon activity page and all. Though that would be nice. A ford pinto will be fine initially. Please at least support parsing of a multisport activity and automatically break it up into multiple activities. How hard can that be?
I'm so glad I found this thread. Yes, please Strava put multisport / brick workout activity up. If you guys want sign up for an account on Trainingpeaks.com because they do show the brick workouts. Of course with Trainingpeaks It's not as detailed and nice looking at Strava but hey you can still share it on facebook and stuff.
I agree with Elle and Pieter. I guess that swim support for Triathletes would be a free feature so the to do list should be ordered by premium features. I have some Brazilian rider friends that have become premium members, but the Triathletes friends don't use Strava because the lack of functionality to them. Anyway the Strava Development Team is creating great features like heatmap.
About 2 yr since original post now. Seems Strava has quite a long to do list.... :(
Please understand how it seems so unfair to us Triathletes that all the effort we put into swimming doesn't show up in our profile page , doesn't add to the total of hours/distances on our stats. So if I bike twice a week and swim another three , on my profile page it seems like I'm slacking :-) If you can do something complex as "heat maps" , It's really is hard to believe that you can't add simple swims to the "Activity Sumary / Activity Type " Thanks for your help
Splitting the workout removes power data captured by the garmin - will this ever be supported by Strava? At the moment its not possible to look at metrics for my multi sport activities without using competing apps...
@Sebastien - Yes CMS has been having some hiccups recently. There is a notice on the front of their site about it. Right now it is a bit hit or miss, but I'd say it has been working about 95% of the time for me lately. I just double check at the end of each week and manually upload the 1 or 2 workouts it missed. Not perfect, but easier than doing a 100% manual export/import.
Agree with Chad - not a big deal to get the 5 separate files (swim, T1, bike, T2, run) into Strava to analyse as standalone legs. Simply upload the files directly "from file" - my .FIT files are in AppData/Roaming/Garmin/Devices/xxxxxx/Activities
My current (910XT) workaround for this isn't perfect, but it works well enough for now...
You don't end up with a single workout that has multiple views, but at least you get the activities in and categorized properly so that you can review/track them.
With regards to Sebastien N.'s remarks, why not having the option to have it split, or have it as a single, multisport activity? Maybe have it as a preference option, or choose it when uploading.
Premium Member with a Garmin 910 XT - Triathlete
Would love to have a multi-sport activity split... the device register it this way, and upload it this way on Garmin Connect... I don't want to be simplistic, but it seems feasible.
Strava is so much better overall but for a triathlete I feel that 2 features are missing:
- as mentioned above, multi-sport activities
- treatment of wim activities
This ought to be relatively simple to do. Set activity type as triathlon, when uploading the import routine asks for swim, t1, bike, t2, run times & then chops & imports accordingly. Not that hard, don't see why it's taken so long for Strava to implement.
Loving strava - am also a premium subscriber a triathlete, and looking to buy an 910xt.
I am also currently using a swimsense monitor to track swims.
It'd be a brilliant feature to be able to have multi sport separation. The data is there, being able to separate the data that falls into each category at import and then having that data logged against the segments and recorded against stats for each discipline would be brilliant.
I also have a 910XT and would love to be able to use a multisport upload feature! lease implement ASAP. thanks Strava,!
Last week I spend approx 20 hrs on hiking but none is shown in the activity summary as it only shows running & cycling.. I'm so annoyed by it! I could set those acitivities on 'run' in order to make them appear but as it where HIKES and not RUNS I don't want to do this. When will finally be the option available to also show other activity types in your activity summary?...
Strava, I've started my 30 week countdown to an IM, and as a premium member, I'm not getting any information/benefit from my brick sessions that I wouldn't be getting as a free member.
Please look at improving this or I'll struggle to see the value in premium, as a triathlete.
Thanks for the terrific individual work on running & cycling; would really appreciate you adding triathlete functionality.
+1 I've just got a 910, and done a tri with it, Strava regocnises that it's a multi lap event, but I've no way to have it as different sports. I'm not a techy person so I don't want to faff about with uploading, deleting and editing files. Surely this is something that should be sorted out. This is a fairly basic feature and I can't believe that a request like this has gotten to be 18 months old without a decent resolution.
This is ridiculous that this feature is not enabled. As a premium member i expect some relatively straight-forward programming can solve this. Please sort this out
I did a run-bike-run yesterday, recorded it on a Forerunner 305, and uploaded it to Strava. I got three activities. Although that's a little annoying, as others have already noted, I'm not complaining, as Garmin Connect fails to upload the very same data. Their bleeping own data!
Anyways, it would be great to have these multisport activities in one activity. It is only a matter of representation, as Strava is able to parse the data.
Add me to the people who would love to see this feature!
You could also download the multisport race to Endomondo and export the files from there..
Why on earth does strava not allow me to upload my triathlon data?? After all this training listed on Strava & it won't show the actual race. Fortunately its very easy to switch to an trainingpeaks.com as Strava is unable to perform its primary function.
Just ran into this on my new 910XT as well. +1, please support!
Yep, I "ran" into this problem too about the Multisport feature...but Elle at support is right and it is the easiest way to do her recommended work around for those that have Garmin Connect accounts (thank you!). Interesting to let you know that TrainingPeaks.com handles all 5 segments (swim/t1/bike/t2/run) as seperate files when uplaoding--so they have it figured out. Strava: please contact them to get a recommendation on how they did it (and buy them a beer)! ;)
So, is there any progress on this? Strava used to be smart enough to split up the activites during upload, but that seems to have been broken in the last 6 months or so.
Right now, I'm having to upload everything to Garmin Connect, export the tcx files, and then manually upload them to Strava. Given that Garmin is steadily adding the social features I've used Strava for, I'm wondering why I even go through the hassle at this point.
The real swim support would be a great feature to strava. It is amazing to bike and run and I guess that would be great to swim too.
This would be a great feature to have.
Agree with all. Any updates on this functionality?
Please add me to the list of triathletes screaming for new features and support built into the Garmin 910xt. Clearing out the activity by holding down reset and switching to the next sport (swim --> bike, bike --> run) is ok, but can be cumbersome during a race. Incorporating the SWOLF and Efficiency swim ratings along with stroke rate would be awesome. If something could be developed similar to your Suffer Score for brick workouts, taking in HR, Watts, etc and apply to the whole workout, that would be amazing!
Here's how I did it. Complicated workaround but it worked.
1 - Save the activity file (.fit) from your Garmin device somewhere
2 - Upload from file
3 - Crop the first leg
4 - Save it in GPX (must be Premium)
5 - Delete from Strava
6 - Same operation but with second leg
7 - Same operation with 3rd leg
8 - You now have 3 GPX files on your hard drive, one for each leg
9 - Upload from file, starting from first leg
10 - I know, it is long and tedious and Strava really needs to support splitting activities
Any updates on this thread? Would love to see this supported by Strava!
Not having decent swim analysis which includes having it show up in my profile and count towards workout time is what is keeping me from upgrading to premium. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to clone either the running or cycling functions for swimming. Multi-sport capability is also high on my list.
Agrre, this would be great.
Yes add multi-sport events. I don't mind hitting the lap button to break the data into segments (eg. swim, T1, bike, T2, run) during a competition. Scrolling through menus during a competition would never work, but post-editing and reviewing at my desk later in the day would be awesome. Isn't that why I am paying for this?
Ditto Jeremy, Auto handling of multisport activities and handling the health data from the BC1000 would tip me over the edge into being a premium customer. Particularly now we are in Duathlon season. I have a Garmin 910XT, BC1000 and Edge 800.
I did a trial of the premium service and found I didn't really use the features, so I cancelled the premium, but if this feature were added to the premium service, I'd subscribe in a jiffy.
Hurry up please!! I just did an adventure race, and I'd love to break the data into the canoe/biking/trekking segments
Hi red rock - it is true, uploading multi-sport files still results in one activity page. We are still working on a better system for splitting up the various activity types. Thanks for your patience. -Elle
Elle.... No the multisport is not working still. (You can see my May@ activity, which should've been a swim, then transition (1:08), then a 5k run.) It's all showing up as ONE sport (running), even though the Garmin 910xt was set for SWIM, T, RUN. Easy fix?
+1 for Multisport
Hi Tom - this is a known issue with some browsers, we're working on a fix. Are you using the browser Internet Explorer? In the meantime, try either Chrome or Firefox and the upload process should work fine.
OK thx Elle. Excuse the ignorance - I can export each separate activity to TCX but how exactly do you then upload the separate parts to Strava? I have tried clicking on Upload "from file" option and selecting the TCX file exported, but all it does is ask if I want to open it or save it. If I select Open it asks me what program I want to use to open the file. Where am I going wrong? - should I be saving it somewhere in particular? Thanks again!
