This would mean Strava would support an activity that included multiple sports in one activity page - like a bike to a run, or a swim to a bike to a run, with transitions.
I see that we can add the activity manually which is great but we still cannot upload it from the 910. Can we expect this feature soon?
I will add that I'd love to see Strava support the swim data from the 910XT
It would be great if I could split an activity in two, to split out the run / bike, since during the race (with a garmin 110 anyway) it's a little difficult to stop timer, store activity and then start another, all in the heat of the battle! Strava is by far my favorite website for this stuff and dispite this I still am a total strava nerd. Thanks for all you do.
Or even allow the swim to be added with a distance... and allow the distance to be manually input as gps tracking underwater on my iphone is not practical.
I need to be able to log total miles swam just like running and biking...
yes i always get errors too when i synchronize my Garmin Forerunner after i did two or three sports in a row (triathlon!) and i guess my followers are getting angry because it always adds like 3 different activities and so it spams the dashboard for all of them... !
Please think of an intelligent support for multi sports! Thx! :)
+1 for multisport support, or at least swim data from the 910XT. Awesome service, by the way!
yes, definitely need to accept swim data from 910xt!
Yes - please give us triathletes some love. Please add support for multisport (swim, bike, run and transitions)!!!!!!
Hello Mike, Sam, G, Dan and Nick - I believe we do accept files from the Garmin 910XT. We allow the upload of swim data as well, as we have the "swim" activity category. If you still find otherwise, let us know by starting a new ticket in Strava Support. If possible, add the swim file that is not uploading.
Thanks! Strava Support
Great news on the swim category. However, when I uploaded my 910xt data from my race yesterday Strava just sees all portions as being on the bike. Since the 910xt parses the swim, T1, bike, T2 and run out already I wonder why Strava isn't seeing these individual segments correctly?
Perhaps and interim solution would be to allow us to at least go into LAPS and then change each laps into the correct category. For instance, my first lap is all swim - it would be nice to flag that portion of the data as swim so as to not effect my bike times/data.
Hi Thomas, I understand what you mean - Strava does not auto-split a multisport file into separate activities. If a single multi-sport file is uploaded to Strava, it must be listed under just one activity type.
If you were to create a separate swim workout that is its own file, it would be possible to upload that activity as a swim on Strava.
Thanks for all the feedback, and hopefully the processing of multi-sport files will be coming soon!
-Elle, Strava Support
In the interim, could you allow us to edit each lap and change the sport type? Or pehaps let us create segments and assign the laps to segments.
Is it possible to get swim sessions (open water - recorded wtih a GPS device) to appear on my profile home page, currently only my biking and run training appears even though my swim sessions do appear on my training calendar. So my swim times are not included in my totol weekly training time.
+1. I would also like to see the swim training to appear on the profile page, along with support of multisport logging using the garmin 910.
I did a 70.3 yesterday and really want to upload my race...please, please, please make this feature available. I have the 910 for a reason! Strava, help a triathlete out!
Agreed - triathletes are cyclists, too, after all... Would be great to be able to either have an auto-parse or, as an interim solution, to be able to assign different activities by lap (I can remember to start a new lap on each). Note that this is just a bit different from what Ms. Anderson suggests above (a reasonable suggestion, but it does require resetting after the swim, T1, bike, T2 and run - kind of a pain during a race!). Ultimate would be to work with Garmin and accept the data that they already have (e.g., on the 910). I can't believe that there are that few multi-sport folks on Strava that it doesn't matter (or perhaps the view is just VERY geared toward cycling only - which would be OK if I knew that, then I could find another solution...). Any feedback from Strava appreciated.
Oh, and I love the site! Just wanted to register that, too. :)
I've found that I can manually create the brick information by doing the following:
1. load your original file for everything
2. crop down your track to just the activity you did last, such as a run.
3. upload the same file again, and crop it to the activity you did second to last (or first if you only did two activities).
4. keep repeating from last to first until you're finished.
While this is not ideal, it will keep your run/bike/swim data separate for decent analysis.
Hi Elle Anderson (STRAVA),
Thanks for your feedback. Even if users can't split a multi-sport activity into its separate parts automatically, it would still be nice to have the SWIM part in the profile so taht we can track TOTAL SWIM time and summaries. Thank you.
Agreed. It's nice to see the weekly training hours, but since there is no "fully supported" swimming category, the time is incomplete and I have to manually add up swim stats.
For some reason Strava seems to leave some of my running and biking out when upload data from races. I've got a 310XT and the legs get cropped down. Did an olympic triathlon and the last 10k of the bike leg disappeared, as did the last 17 or so kilometers from a half IM. Has this happened to others?
Hi Henrick - that is consistent with other reports I've been hearing. We're currently working on Strava's handling of the Multisport function, which exists on most of the forerunners. As you report, there seems to be some data cropped in the process of dividing up a multisport file into the respective parts on Strava.
As a workaround, it is possible to upload the data to Garmin Connect, then export the individual activity types as TCX to upload to Strava.
Supporting multisport files is on our list of things to improve, so thanks for your patience and feedback!
Elle, Strava Support
please add support for triathlon! :)
Just tired to edit my ride/run segment into two different segments, but when trying upload second edited segment (run), it won't let me - citing "duplicate activity". Little help for the frustrated....
Sorry, file originally created on iphone.
Sorry, I found after I made those instructions that there is a slight modification needed to the instructions...but I can't edit my post.
What you need to do on the second upload to keep it from being a duplicate is to open the file in a simple text edit like windows notepad. Find the very first time located in the file and change it by 1 second (up or down will change the order it shows in your feed). Then you can upload it and it won't complain that it's a duplicate.
Thanks for the quick response. However, don't think I'm on the right track. To 'splain further - I did my tri on iphone, uploads automatically to web. Love to see splits on run mode, but when it sees my sub 3 min/mile ride data, it crushes the running leader board. Not fair to those that were on foot vs. spinning a 53/11 gear. So, I downloaded combo effort to a friends site, cropped for run, and saved gpx to my desk top. Reloaded original, cropped for ride, and saved gpx to desk top. Uploaded run to my Strava ok, but no joy on ride will not import as duplicate. Tried the changing first time in notepad as suggested, and still calls "duplicate". it doesn't seem to be changing the other times. Grrrr.
And...got it this time, with your instructions (Find the very first time located in the file and change it by 1 second (up or down will change the order it shows in your feed).
I must have been messing with wrong 'time' in txt file. Sorry. Just a little tricky!
Love to see a button under "Actions" labeled "Split Activity" and when clicking on it, would allow you to scroll through the activity, like cropping, and 'insert' a "split activity" at some point. Then file there after would be saved automatically with some macro function as two activities. (Code writers probably shaking their heads).
Also - under edit activity - can you add a label for "paddlers" (stand up, canoe, kayak, etc.)
Thanks again for the support.
I do my cropping here on Strava and it seems to work. You can edit the ride and change it to a run or vice versa before or after cropping, and it will update the leader boards appropriately. It may show you as the fastest runner in the world momentarily until you change the ride to a run. So to review my process, I export the full file from Strava, crop the ride or run down, edit the exported file to change the time and upload after I have cropped the first segment down, then crop the second segment. This seems to work well for me. Perhaps you could do a step by step of what you are doing to see if we can figure out how to get it to work.
Jeremy and Jeff - thanks for sharing your process for editing multisport activities on Strava!
Thought I'd chime in here:
1. Yes, Jeremy the process you describe in your most recent comments is I think the easiest and most efficient.
2. Jeff - glad you figured out the right timestamp to edit!
3. We have an "Admin only" split ride tool that we're currently testing. If you would like your file split by us (can be split multiple times), just send us a note in Support with the time splits where you would like the file split. We'll get it done for you!
Thanks for all the feedback! Elle, Strava Support
Would be very much appreciated to have full triathlon support.
Many thanks to the STRAVA Team!! Great work!!!
Once you upload an activity and crop it though, doesn't Strava restrict you from uploading the same file again? I've found this to be the case previously but I haven't tried it recently.
Hi, I do use a Garmin Swim in the pool, and I found it very useful with all the informations on pace in any split and length when you upload data on Garmin Connect. I'm training for triathlon and using STRAVA for rides & runs, finding on Activity Summary Last 4 Weeks a rapid view on my weekly activity. I do add manually Swim data on STRAVA but, of course, these are not appearing in the Activity Summary even if I can find them on Dashboard and on training pages...
What could be very useful is: (1), the possibility of uploading data on STRAVA from Garmin Swim watches or from 910; (3), the presence of swim data on Activity Summary Last 4 Weeks (blue is the color of choice ;) ) so to make easier triathletes' life!
By the way, think that: "If it's not on STRAVA, it never happened!"
Yes can i add the request for swims to show up in the 4 week summary.
I am happy to have to add them manually whilst functionality gets developed but would love to see it included in the amount of time i have exercised in last week.
+1 on the swims
Please add swim option, for triathlon i'm only gonna upgrade to premium when this is added! +1
It would be great to have one recording be able to be split into several components (run/kayak/bike for me, but others will want other sports). The solution could capture the splits on the phone in addition to doing the splits manually on the web interface. At the moment if i do 3 sports in one session that comes out as 3 lines on the feed - it would be great if this were displayed as one line on the strava feed showing the different sports as blocks.
Elle - you are the ultimate support person by the way - awesome responses on the web and in this forum!
Just curious - has anyone with a Multisport Garmin device that records FIT files (910XT) uploaded a multisport file recently? Just curious if we still auto-split the various separate activities after the recent updates to our uploader.
FYI - indoor swimming with the Garmin 910XT should now upload to Strava.
My multisport (310XT) on 20th March uploaded as 2 separate files (1 bike, 1 run).
Today with the new automatic uploader it has all loaded as 1 single file.
I've just tried changing the time of my garmin 305 forerunner in notepad and its still saying its a duplicate file? any answers?
Hi Elle. I've just uploaded today a file from Garmin 910XT re yesterday's ITU Auckland (New Zealand) tri yesterday. Garmin recorded it as Multisport (5 legs - swim, T1, Bike, T2, Run) but Strava shows it as one event of 51kms. So no it doesn't seem to auto-split the activities. rgds
Thanks Tom and Andrew,
That would make sense - The change we made with the new uploader was likely going to change how multisport files were handled by Strava, causing them to appear as one activity.
The workaround for now to separate the file into separate activities is to upload to GarminConnect an then export each separate activity there to TCX, and upload the separate parts to Strava.
In the future, we hope to design activity pages that can deal with each of the activities (and transitions) separately. Thanks for your patience!
OK thx Elle. Excuse the ignorance - I can export each separate activity to TCX but how exactly do you then upload the separate parts to Strava? I have tried clicking on Upload "from file" option and selecting the TCX file exported, but all it does is ask if I want to open it or save it. If I select Open it asks me what program I want to use to open the file. Where am I going wrong? - should I be saving it somewhere in particular? Thanks again!
Hi Tom - this is a known issue with some browsers, we're working on a fix. Are you using the browser Internet Explorer? In the meantime, try either Chrome or Firefox and the upload process should work fine.
+1 for Multisport
Elle.... No the multisport is not working still. (You can see my May@ activity, which should've been a swim, then transition (1:08), then a 5k run.) It's all showing up as ONE sport (running), even though the Garmin 910xt was set for SWIM, T, RUN. Easy fix?
Hi red rock - it is true, uploading multi-sport files still results in one activity page. We are still working on a better system for splitting up the various activity types. Thanks for your patience. -Elle
Hurry up please!! I just did an adventure race, and I'd love to break the data into the canoe/biking/trekking segments
I did a trial of the premium service and found I didn't really use the features, so I cancelled the premium, but if this feature were added to the premium service, I'd subscribe in a jiffy.
Ditto Jeremy, Auto handling of multisport activities and handling the health data from the BC1000 would tip me over the edge into being a premium customer. Particularly now we are in Duathlon season. I have a Garmin 910XT, BC1000 and Edge 800.
Yes add multi-sport events. I don't mind hitting the lap button to break the data into segments (eg. swim, T1, bike, T2, run) during a competition. Scrolling through menus during a competition would never work, but post-editing and reviewing at my desk later in the day would be awesome. Isn't that why I am paying for this?
Agrre, this would be great.
Not having decent swim analysis which includes having it show up in my profile and count towards workout time is what is keeping me from upgrading to premium. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to clone either the running or cycling functions for swimming. Multi-sport capability is also high on my list.
Any updates on this thread? Would love to see this supported by Strava!
Here's how I did it. Complicated workaround but it worked.
1 - Save the activity file (.fit) from your Garmin device somewhere
2 - Upload from file
3 - Crop the first leg
4 - Save it in GPX (must be Premium)
5 - Delete from Strava
6 - Same operation but with second leg
7 - Same operation with 3rd leg
8 - You now have 3 GPX files on your hard drive, one for each leg
9 - Upload from file, starting from first leg
10 - I know, it is long and tedious and Strava really needs to support splitting activities
Please add me to the list of triathletes screaming for new features and support built into the Garmin 910xt. Clearing out the activity by holding down reset and switching to the next sport (swim --> bike, bike --> run) is ok, but can be cumbersome during a race. Incorporating the SWOLF and Efficiency swim ratings along with stroke rate would be awesome. If something could be developed similar to your Suffer Score for brick workouts, taking in HR, Watts, etc and apply to the whole workout, that would be amazing!
Agree with all. Any updates on this functionality?
This would be a great feature to have.
The real swim support would be a great feature to strava. It is amazing to bike and run and I guess that would be great to swim too.
So, is there any progress on this? Strava used to be smart enough to split up the activites during upload, but that seems to have been broken in the last 6 months or so.
Right now, I'm having to upload everything to Garmin Connect, export the tcx files, and then manually upload them to Strava. Given that Garmin is steadily adding the social features I've used Strava for, I'm wondering why I even go through the hassle at this point.
Yep, I "ran" into this problem too about the Multisport feature...but Elle at support is right and it is the easiest way to do her recommended work around for those that have Garmin Connect accounts (thank you!). Interesting to let you know that TrainingPeaks.com handles all 5 segments (swim/t1/bike/t2/run) as seperate files when uplaoding--so they have it figured out. Strava: please contact them to get a recommendation on how they did it (and buy them a beer)! ;)
Just ran into this on my new 910XT as well. +1, please support!
Why on earth does strava not allow me to upload my triathlon data?? After all this training listed on Strava & it won't show the actual race. Fortunately its very easy to switch to an trainingpeaks.com as Strava is unable to perform its primary function.
You could also download the multisport race to Endomondo and export the files from there..
Add me to the people who would love to see this feature!
I did a run-bike-run yesterday, recorded it on a Forerunner 305, and uploaded it to Strava. I got three activities. Although that's a little annoying, as others have already noted, I'm not complaining, as Garmin Connect fails to upload the very same data. Their bleeping own data!
Anyways, it would be great to have these multisport activities in one activity. It is only a matter of representation, as Strava is able to parse the data.
This is ridiculous that this feature is not enabled. As a premium member i expect some relatively straight-forward programming can solve this. Please sort this out
+1 I've just got a 910, and done a tri with it, Strava regocnises that it's a multi lap event, but I've no way to have it as different sports. I'm not a techy person so I don't want to faff about with uploading, deleting and editing files. Surely this is something that should be sorted out. This is a fairly basic feature and I can't believe that a request like this has gotten to be 18 months old without a decent resolution.
Strava, I've started my 30 week countdown to an IM, and as a premium member, I'm not getting any information/benefit from my brick sessions that I wouldn't be getting as a free member.
Please look at improving this or I'll struggle to see the value in premium, as a triathlete.
Thanks for the terrific individual work on running & cycling; would really appreciate you adding triathlete functionality.
Last week I spend approx 20 hrs on hiking but none is shown in the activity summary as it only shows running & cycling.. I'm so annoyed by it! I could set those acitivities on 'run' in order to make them appear but as it where HIKES and not RUNS I don't want to do this. When will finally be the option available to also show other activity types in your activity summary?...
I also have a 910XT and would love to be able to use a multisport upload feature! lease implement ASAP. thanks Strava,!
Loving strava - am also a premium subscriber a triathlete, and looking to buy an 910xt.
I am also currently using a swimsense monitor to track swims.
It'd be a brilliant feature to be able to have multi sport separation. The data is there, being able to separate the data that falls into each category at import and then having that data logged against the segments and recorded against stats for each discipline would be brilliant.
This ought to be relatively simple to do. Set activity type as triathlon, when uploading the import routine asks for swim, t1, bike, t2, run times & then chops & imports accordingly. Not that hard, don't see why it's taken so long for Strava to implement.
Premium Member with a Garmin 910 XT - Triathlete
Would love to have a multi-sport activity split... the device register it this way, and upload it this way on Garmin Connect... I don't want to be simplistic, but it seems feasible.
Strava is so much better overall but for a triathlete I feel that 2 features are missing:
- as mentioned above, multi-sport activities
- treatment of wim activities
With regards to Sebastien N.'s remarks, why not having the option to have it split, or have it as a single, multisport activity? Maybe have it as a preference option, or choose it when uploading.
My current (910XT) workaround for this isn't perfect, but it works well enough for now...
You don't end up with a single workout that has multiple views, but at least you get the activities in and categorized properly so that you can review/track them.
Agree with Chad - not a big deal to get the 5 separate files (swim, T1, bike, T2, run) into Strava to analyse as standalone legs. Simply upload the files directly "from file" - my .FIT files are in AppData/Roaming/Garmin/Devices/xxxxxx/Activities
@Sebastien - Yes CMS has been having some hiccups recently. There is a notice on the front of their site about it. Right now it is a bit hit or miss, but I'd say it has been working about 95% of the time for me lately. I just double check at the end of each week and manually upload the 1 or 2 workouts it missed. Not perfect, but easier than doing a 100% manual export/import.
Splitting the workout removes power data captured by the garmin - will this ever be supported by Strava? At the moment its not possible to look at metrics for my multi sport activities without using competing apps...
Please understand how it seems so unfair to us Triathletes that all the effort we put into swimming doesn't show up in our profile page , doesn't add to the total of hours/distances on our stats. So if I bike twice a week and swim another three , on my profile page it seems like I'm slacking :-) If you can do something complex as "heat maps" , It's really is hard to believe that you can't add simple swims to the "Activity Sumary / Activity Type " Thanks for your help
About 2 yr since original post now. Seems Strava has quite a long to do list.... :(
I agree with Elle and Pieter. I guess that swim support for Triathletes would be a free feature so the to do list should be ordered by premium features. I have some Brazilian rider friends that have become premium members, but the Triathletes friends don't use Strava because the lack of functionality to them. Anyway the Strava Development Team is creating great features like heatmap.
I'm so glad I found this thread. Yes, please Strava put multisport / brick workout activity up. If you guys want sign up for an account on Trainingpeaks.com because they do show the brick workouts. Of course with Trainingpeaks It's not as detailed and nice looking at Strava but hey you can still share it on facebook and stuff.
Yes, 910xt mutilsport support please! We don't need a gold plated Cadillac solution that will take years, with a fancy triathlon activity page and all. Though that would be nice. A ford pinto will be fine initially. Please at least support parsing of a multisport activity and automatically break it up into multiple activities. How hard can that be?
Folks, any news on supporting multisport from Forerunner 910xt?
Come on Strava sort it out. add Swimming, and spliting events, and then that opens up a whole host of Strava challenge options plus loads more users.
Having my swims in the Activity Summary would indeed really be a nice upgrade!
Please, Strava, add swims in the activity summary! Even just for manual entries. Come on it could not be so difficult!
