Options to filter and sort the Dashboard Feed on Strava

Rosie
suggested this on February 27, 2012, 1:41 PM

Provide options to filter your Dashboard - for example:

  • Filter out commutes
  • Filter out rides less than X miles
  • Sort by number of Kudos, ascending
  • Sort by number of Comments
  • Filter for Grouped activities
  • Filter by Activity Type
  • Sort by notable achievements (KOMs/QOMs/CRs/PRs)
  • Choose a default Feed view: My Activities, Clubs, etc.
  • Other?

Yes, would be really nice to get rid of the challenges flooding my dashboard. It's annoying when people subscribe to more challenges than they have activities. I'd like to see pure activities only.

Add a filter to sort your friends (without being in a group) , so it will be easier to follow on the flow only who we want....

Do commutes still show in the Activity Feed for followers? I'm new to this and have been marking my short commutes to private but just realized I'm not getting any credit for them

Ridiculous that this hasn't been actioned yet.

Has nothing happened because of the scope of the change? (There are a lot of filtering options suggested)

I only want to filter out rides marked as a commute! How about taking that on, one part at a time!

Why filter out commutes. I would like to see only commutes filtering all else out. I use commutes as part of my training schedule.

I would like to be able to catogorize or group those I follow by creating my personal groups which I then could filter in the activity feed. I could then group those I work with in one group. Close friends in one group. Selebreties in one group and so on.
Clubs are not the same, as people have to join them.
So when I select Activity feed I would then like to chose My activities, Following, FollowGroup work, FollowGroup Selebs, FollowGroup Family and so on.

Please, please, please, allow challenges from other people to be configurably removed from my timeline. There's more challenge activity than actual activity.

+1 to this suggestion. Especially for filtering commutes. I want to log them but it's spam on both my activity feed and the activity feed (and emails) of anyone following me.

What does the current commute tag even do? I can't find any filtering option to isolate my commutes.

As a new user of this site and one that's not into the 'social media' thing I find the FaceBook tag and Find Friends and all that just eye pollution. The Dashboard view definitely needs to be configurable. Of course I do plan to socialize here, of course, eventually. I think this post counts for a month's worth.

I really like the idea of people being able hide commutes from their feed, or otherwise minimise their spammy impact (the simplified one-liner approach is an interesting idea).

I also like the idea of marking activities as "Temporarily Private" to avoid showing up in a feed, but in say a week it'll count towards goals/charts/whatever. In some ways this is a lot like the commute tag, but might be things like "went to the shops" or "rode to a friend's house" which aren't exactly commute... but are "boring" or utility cycling rather than fitness/competition/whatever. Perhaps a second tag for that on top of the "commute tag"...? Or a broader term like "Utility" instead of "Commute", and an explanation of what it means.

Also can we actually get the Commute tag (and/or Temporarily Private, Utility tags, whatever) actually in the phone apps?

As far as using the commute tag goes, I think the commute tagged data would also be especially interesting to separate out for local council feedback (I believe Strava do provide info to councils?). Not sure if they'd actually be interested in commuters stats separated out from general riding, but in terms of traffic, and peak hours, I suspect that would be more interesting on its own?

Agree with James Irish, I like to upload my commutes and set as public because I like being registered on segments but dont like the thought of everyone following me having to look at my boring commutes, would be a good idea for users to be able to select a checkbox to ignore the commutes of the people they are following.

Having a feed for "Friends" vs. "Acquaintances" would be a great start

A private distinction nobody else would be able to see... but allows you to drill down to those you actually care about.

Elie, What is the teams view on using this metadata to filter in "Training Log", "Training Calendar", "My Activities", and "Dashboard"? Sections of the app I consider personal tools for analysis. IMO the use case of analysis is stronger than the use case of not spamming followers. Thoughts?

In regard to filtering commute activities from the Activity Feed but allowing commutes to be eligible for Challenges - One workaround to consider would be to mark commutes as private just for a day or two so that the activities no longer appear at the top of your Follower's feeds. Obviously, this doesn't replace the need for an actual tool to filter the Feed...

I put a lot of commute miles in and mark them as commute, but I don't mark them as private since then they don't show up in the rest of the stats and challenges. However, I try to balance SPAM by not putting in my short mile commutes in Strava since I don't want to annoy my followers by 1 and 2 mile commutes (at least I try ;-)). Filtering commutes would be good or allow private rides to show up in stats.

I mostly would like to be able to filter by commute. I want the miles to count towards challenges and don't mind if they appear in my feed, but when I'm looking at the "Training Log", "Training Calendar", "My Activities", and "Dashboard" I would like to be able to filter by "commute"/"non-commute". I set goals on "non-commute" miles, but like to track "commute" miles to see how much wear-and-tear my components have undergone and to simply get a more holistic picture of how active I am.

I hope that feedback helps.

The commute tag would be great to allow you to add kg's for Panniers and also put a little symbol next to any PR achievement to signify you not only kicked butt on your commute, but without the help of a bunch.

Also as a filter for other people to select on their feed, do not show others daily commutes. But every weekend a summary would appear such as: X commuted ????klm's with X elevation this week and burned X calories and X trophies achieved. The calories summary might provoke some thought.

Personally I am proud of my commute as boring as it may be to some. 20 SOLO exposed klm's with over 130metres in elevation. Never ever seen one other commuter one the same route, I must be mad.

I agree with customized lists. We should be able to choose which of the people we follow show up on our feed, and which don't.

I understand that the Strava dev team is busy, but I want to reiterate how important a feature this is. Strava is great, but it's frustrating that when I log on every day, I have to see all the recent activities of everyone I follow, whether I want to or not.

I also don't care to see rides under X miles, commutes are the worst and I also could care less who set what goal or actually met a personal goal.  There are riders I follow, but a lot of their rides are of no interest to me although they do offer specific qualities I want to see.

I would like to be able to create my own lists of people and see just them - customisable lists. This surely can't be that hard to implement.

Strava is anyone listening? Would be nice to have even some acknowledgement even if it's to say you're never ever going to allow any more filtering....

So do they read this? I posted a suggestion via another channel, and they replied asking me to post in the forum... well...

Anyways re this thread, I think this is crucial. also adding a free-text search too would be nice. sometimes I remember a ride that was terrible, and I know I wrote something in the comments, but instead of being able to search for it, I have to go ride by ride to find it.

I think by default anything tagged with "commute" should be filtered from followers' streams UNLESS you break some kind of segment threshold (top 10 overall?).

I fully support this suggestion to filter and sort the feed.  It is great to see that Strava Support (Elle Anderson) are following this, so let's hope for an update soon!

In addition to filtering and sorting, I would like more parameters added to the feed such as ave speed, ave heart rate and suffer score; in fact it would be nice for users to select any parameter that is available.  Some users, above, want to filter out commutes, but I would be one who would want to filter only commutes; I do not think there is a technical reason for not providing any sort/filter a particular user wants.  The interesting thing about commutes is that the distance and climb are always the same, so I do not really want to see that, but I would like to ave speed and so on (that are not presently visible on the feed) so that I can see at a glance how I am doing versus those I am following.

At the same time as Strava hopefully adds sort/filtering, it would be nice to be able to see more activities on my screen.  The only way to do that would be to collapse the information down to one line, but if the filtering could remove the map, then collapsing should happen as consequence.

An update to the thread:

Wondering if any of you noticed that starting a few weeks ago, we now sort the Dashboard Feed according to upload time instead of activity start time as was our previous sorting method. As of now, if you are unable to upload your activity for a few hours after completion, you won't be "buried" way down on the Feed.

Something like a distance slider would work great, you could it so that anything lower than say for example 10km doesn't show up on your feed. Maybe options for the slider could be 3km, 5km, 10km and so on.

I really like the ideas to be able to filter out commutes and rides under x number of kms for both my activities on other people's feeds and for other people's activities on my feed. Or just allow for private activities to count towards challenges. That would solve the first point.

What a waste of typing.  This topic has been going on and on for so long its almost as old as I am.  Unfortunately Strava doesn't read this and they have no intention of make any filtering changes. They are making fools of us.  Heck, we are making fools of ourselves if we think this will do any good.

I'm marking all of my commute rides as private to prevent spamming other people.  My dashboard is spammed from commutes from at least 2 people I'm following.  I would very much like to select whether to show commute rides in my dashboard, whether to show rides less than xx miles, etc.  This would be a WONDERFUL option.

Marking my commute private has a down side.  They don't contribute to my "best ride" for any segments on that route for instance.  We need this filter mechanism!

Please allow us more control of our feeds, like Facebook does! I would like to be able to filter who I see (choose which riders show up - some Strava friends are only acquaintances and I don't need to see what they are doing every time they ride), and even what I see (filter out commutes). And I would like to be able to choose what is my default page - I don't want it to go by default to show me what others are doing, I want it to default to My Activities! Or at least choose that as an option.

I made a request that was deleted so I'll post the same here. I ride 3-5 days a week as a commute and feel that I am definitely spamming followers with the same exact ride two days a week. It's enough that a couple people have already stopped following me. Please allow us to check the Commute button from the iPhone app and filter this out of the news feed. I only have a hald dozen (max) rides per month that actually count as "real" rides, but I want to track all of my mileage.

I would definitely like to see the option to filter out Commutes from my Strava feed - I used to mark all my commutes as private, but then these don't get included in any of the Strava Challenges. As far as I can see, at the moment, the commute check box doesnt actually do anything!

I also would like a filter for commutes, different friends, rides only, etc.  I would argue that certain rides by people are just as boring as seeing commutes and I like to see when friends are riding to work.

Regarding Jeremy's comment, I want the GPS route for my commutes.  Several reasons, 1) I take different routes sometimes and want to know that route info, 2) performance in segments over many commutes helps me see increases in fitness, 3) despite being commutes, I have many PRs on segments and even a few KOMs.  If commutes didn't hold GPS data I'd simply not log them as commutes.  I can see where others might find two rides a day to the same place boring to see in their feed.

I don't formally "train" anymore, I don't consider my commutes junk miles that I don't want any statisical information on.

Here is an idea... When you flag as a commute or trainer ride Strava should only show a smaller (one line?) entry for that particular activity in the feed. Trainer rides that get submitted dont usually have any kind of gps data so why show a map?. This way people can still keep informed of all the activities other people are doing without all the screen space being used up. Even better... why dont you just log the disance / elevation & achievements for rides designated as "commutes" rather than the whole GPS route this would presumably save you a truckload of storage space which is currently wasted on people who dont even want this data. If somebody wants the full GPS mapping thing then they dont turn commute flag on ... simple.

I really need to stop seeing 10km cycle commutes in my dashboard feed - what is the point of showing me all these junk miles!

I've spoken to the concerned individuals and they feel the need to log all their commutes so they can tally how many kms they have done at the end of the year. Fair enough. Why don't you wear a pedometer all year round and see how many steps you've made too!?

Please make them go away!

I consider an activity feed filter extremely important.  I am interested in cycling, not running.  Many cyclists also run.  With the growing popularity of Strava and my ever increasing "Following" list, I miss some activities that below the current page view.  If I could filter out Run activities that wouldn't happen so often. Often I have to click the "More" button several times.  Why the delay in implementing this feature?

Absolutely agree to the Commute options - the 'Commute' tick box currently does nothing (as far as I can tell) and as others have said it can fill up the news feed quickly.   Besides I also don't want my commutes showing up in the club/groups that I am a member of.   Come on Strava lets have some sensible filtering!

An option to filtering the Dashboard feed is to group by user, activity type, or both.  Click on a carat next to the user to expand that user's recent activities.   Do the same for comments as they are currently all displayed and can fill up the feed quickly.
