Troubleshooting for Uploads to Website

My Garmin device is not recognized.

It can often help to ensure that you have the latest version of the Garmin Communicator plugin, which can be found here, or to try uninstalling and reinstalling it. You should make sure that your Garmin is shown under the "Devices Detected" heading at that page (at which Garmin also suggests some of their own troubleshooting tips).

Next, check that you have the current version of your Garmin's software installed on the device. This is most easily done using the Garmin WebUpdater. After downloading and installing, simply connect your Garmin to your computer, run WebUpdater and follow the steps to complete the device software update if necessary.

If your device uses the ANT Agent software (primarily for Forerunner models), you should check that you have the latest version of the ANT Agent software by going to your ANT Agent menu and selecting “Check for Updates...”  You should also try un-pairing and re-pairing your Garmin to the ANT Agent software through the Manage Devices menu.

Finally, if that still fails, a hard-reset on your Garmin will often do the trick.  Steps to reset your Garmin vary by device, but can be found here.

If for some reason your device is still not recognized, but you are able to browse to it from your Desktop, follow these steps to upload your activities:

  1. Click the Upload Activity button on Strava.
  2. Select Upload a file on your computer from the list.
  3. Click Choose File and browse to your device.

On Windows:

      1. Navigate to your Garmin (E:) directory.
      2. Open the Garmin folder.
      3. Open the Activities folder.
      4. Select the file you would like to upload (files are named by activity date).

On Mac:

      1. Navigate to the Garmin folder.
      2. Open the Activities folder.
      3. Select the file you would like to upload (files are named by activity date).

I see an error that the Garmin Communicator Plugin wasn't found.

Download and install the Garmin Communicator Plugin.

The upload page spends a long time "Searching for Activities."

This is usually because your device memory contains a lot of activities. Sometimes you just have to be patient, especially if it's the first time you've connected your device to Strava and you haven't ever cleared your device of old activities. To speed up the uploading process in the future you might want to delete some of the older activities or clear the memory entirely.
